I think I read something about a rise in rickets - not just in kids, but in grown ups too. Because people don't spend as much time outside. I think I'd rather make sure we get out for a walk/trip to the park/whatever rather than taking a suppliment, but that is just me! Was there something about it being more of a problem in winter babies, because summer newborns tend to spend more time outside? Or have I dreamed it all?

I think the vitamin D thing is a relatively new thing. I noticed yesterday it is mentioned in the NICE Guidance on Antenatal Care particularly with reference to breastfeeding. I remember asking on here about vitamin D in around 2008 because I'd googled Little Stars (because people were talking about them and I didn't know what they were) and in the FAQ they had one about whether they were fortified with vitamin D. I thought it was rather random so asked on here if anyone was particularly worried about it and someone said there'd been stuff in the media about some children having rickets so I imagine that is why it has come in as a new thing. (That is all just my own supposition though.)
Vitamin D (or lack of it) has been linked to MS as well I read somewhere and people with MS are taking really high dose vit D suppliments to reduce the number of relapses.Mum of several with a twisted sense of humour and a laundry obsession:o

I wonder if its also the result of near fanatical obsession with smothering kids with sunblock at the merest hint of some sunshine. I think Gwyneth Paltrow had vitamin D deficiency for this reason. We Made-it-3 on 28/01/11 with birth of our gorgeous DD.0

Actually i remember hearing that somewhere. Although to be honest I am always a bit skeptical of facts that I remember hearing "somewhere".... if I don't remember the source I don't know how trustworthy they are!

I never got any supplements to give H while breastfeeding him, so it must be a really new thing.
I got multi vitamins though from breastfeeding group for me to take and they contained vitamin D but i thought it was to help me not the baby!!:j0 -

I've read that somewhere before. Noticed on holidays that more and more children are wearing those all in one swim suits with arms and legs in, rather than just trunks or strappy bathing costumes.
Also some children are less likely to play out due to the fear of strangers and the attraction of computer games etc.
Was talking to Josh a couple of days ago and he couldn't believe it when I said there was no CBeebies or anything like that. When I was little, pre-school children had about 15 minutes of programmes on a lunchtime on BBC2 and that was it until the after school programmes came on!Here I go again on my own....0 -
And I think kiddies programmes were much more exciting only being on at certain times!

there are worries that due to children not playing outside and using factor 50 sunblock that there is Vit D deficiency in children which will lead to problems in later life. a lot of dairy products and cereals for children have added vit d to combat the problem. i;m sure it would be easier to let your child play outside, even in your own garden for 30mins a day.'Children are not things to be moulded, but are people to be unfolded'0

Ds2 has just come down with yet another cold - oh the joys!!
Am having problems with my oldest at the mo too <<sigh>> he's not working very hard at school these days (parents eve was awful/painful ) and now fallen out with his dad @(who is understandably concerned but slightly overbearing). Has made me aware that stuff if v. different now since when I was his age - There was none of the distractions kids today have around then and I'm never v. sure if I am being too lenient/strict enough when it comes to controlling them.
However I had my scan the other day so nice to know that baby seems to be fine. S/he wasn't cooperative though so we still don't know the sex.lol. She said it "looks" more like a girl but I'm not sure what she is basing that on really so don't really want to start buying pink just in case. So stuck with lemon :rotfl:.MSE PARENT CLUB MEMBER.ds1 nov 1997ds2 nov 2007:jFirst DDFirst DD born in june:beer:.0
