Your phone can be faulty or incompatible with American networks.
Vodafone supply you with the airtime (sim card) in the first place and this airtime can be used with any handset.
You have not said if Vodafone supplied you with the handset or even knew what handset your were using.
You have not said what problem you were experiencing. If you send a e-mail to Vodafone from abroad and tell them just your phone doesn't work, what sort of help/reply do you expect? Did you expect that they will call you to USA to ask questions?

Too many questions and too few facts... The only real their fault that I've seen so far was that they have not replied to some two e-mails from America.
  • This morning I recieved a new SIM card from Vodafone. It doesn't work though.

For security reasons, SIM cards are sent out inactive.

If you give 191 a call, they will be able to active the SIM.

How are you supposed to call 191 if the sim is inactive?

they want £155 to do this as my contract is until October. I hoped 12 years of loyalty and paying my bill by direct debit every month with never a problem would mean the claim would be waived as a gesture of goodwill and apology.....

Welll obviously a contract is a contract so if you want to break the contract by leaving them early, they will want some sort of compensation.

So this is what I would do....

If you are at least 9 months into your current contract, you should be able to adjust your tariff.

DON'T do this online via the automated system, the options are crap! I wouldn't bother phoning either.

Get one of the eForum moderators to give you a call by posting a 'polite' request (nobody pats a barking dog!) on the eForum (they are WAAAAY more efficient and helpful - /me waves at the mods as I know they lurk here as well! :) ) and see what they can do to lower the tarriff as much as possible (I got mine lowered from £35 to £15), you will loose texts and talk time, but that doesn't matter because you are about to cancel anyway! Once it is lowered, cancel your contract early. You will still have to pay something, but it will be at least 50% less than the original quote.

There are alternative contact us numbers to call for Customer Services which can be found on the Vodafone website.

Alternatively, a Vodafone store will be able to activate a SIM.

As has been mentioned on the forum many times, you cannot downgrade any YPL tariff.
  • Oh well, I have no idea what a YPL is.

Looks like you have made your bed and now you have to sleep in it. Sorry but VF is in the right here IMHO.

Can't decide if it's more depressing or cheering to find this thread and see how many people feel the same about Vodafone!

I've been with them for 12 years, and actually have never had a problem until recently but now that I have, their call centre bods have made it very clear that they don't give a monkeys. I guess for £35 a month, why would they?

Recently went on a dream holiday to the US and was the central contact for a group of friends but despite checking beforehand with them, my phone would not work. Hugely annoying and inconvenient.

Sent an email (also with an alternative contact number) asking for them to rectifiy it ASAP - 3 weeks on have still not had the courtesy of a reply by email or phone.

Two more calls and a second ignored email later and all I want is to get my PAK code and change to a different provider. However, they want £155 to do this as my contract is until October. I hoped 12 years of loyalty and paying my bill by direct debit every month with never a problem would mean the claim would be waived as a gesture of goodwill and apology.....

But no. I'm told they would only waive the fee if I was dead. Nice.
