The "strike" is just a way of them getting an extra day off for the loss of just one days wages.
Well we was striking to have boxing day off seems a bit stupid to strike on any other day.
They can get the triple pay and extra days holiday by working on Monday or Tuesday.
I think youll find we dont get any extra for working the monday or tuesday or any other bank holiday, but you would no better than me right. our annual leave entitlement includes lieu days for bank holidays (but we dont get the extras you all get with xmas falling on a weekend). Im guessing you will be getting your triple pay for working monday and tuesday but not me I get same money regardless

Funnily enough there are no pickets at any of the tube stations I have seen and what are the chances of further strikes about this boxing day issue...
of course theres no picket lines! dont be silly what would be the point of losing a days pay to have boxing day off if i was gonna stand on a picket line.

do you even read what you write before you post it on here?
anyone actually got an intelligent argument here?

check your dates for the diary of a tube driver, The person who wrote that joined the company over 25 years ago and thats the account his experiences 25 years ago.

And the march of technology has made the job much harder, hasn't it? Oh wait, it hasn't.....:rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:

I seriously doubt there is that much more to learn than the aforementioned driver. Seriously doubt it. However I can guarantee he was more "hands on" 25 years ago than you will be now in daily driving.

Aren't you supposed to be on strike? If so, why are you posting here?
  • ryan: I think you're wasting yr time on this thread - it's full of whingeing 'I have to do it so what's yr problem' types. most of them sound like 'thatcher's children' , unable to see the benefits of collective bargaining. anyone getting in their way has got to be pushed aside.

makes me wonder which group rates self-interest most; tube drivers or the frothers here.

Call me stupid, but if you don't get any extra for working on a bank holiday why would you be on strike on boxing day over extra pay for working the boxing day...

Best post on this thread so far!

I would give up as well Ryan; you arent going to convince those who disagree with you.

I suupport your action and i'm sure many others do too.

    Good luck.

The thing is, torontoboy, you're obviously TOO YOUNG to remember the 1970's when the unions brought the country to its knees coming out with a comment like that. I'll give you an idea - mountains of rubbish piled in the streets for months, intermittent electricity, empty shop shelves, assuming the shops themselves weren't closed, no mail etc etc.

And my generation, Thatchers children, remember the miners strike and what happened to a union who got too big for its boots.

Thanks to the mad protests of the unions in the 1970's which brought misery to the entire country for most of a decade and lost millions of peopel more people jobs than they saved - just look at BL for example, lots of people no longer support them when they're blathering on like they are in the tube strikes.

I dont mind the collective bargaining at all - I have to deal with it with my staff at work so i fully understand this.

Why are you bring party politics into this again? The tories have not made this strike happen.

Ryan came on here trying to garner some sympathy for the reasons why he is striking, I cant give him that sympathy because they are trying to force LULs hand here by striking on one of the busiest shopping days of the year.

This has failed. And now no amount of arguing will dissuade people that his cause is a just one. He isnt even out on a picket line so just an excuse for them to stay at home another day. A strong union would have its members out on the picket line proving to the doubters that its nto a ploy for a nice day off work at home with the family. They havent done this so are making themselves look even more silly.

I am not too young to remember the 70's, (0r the 60's!), and without wishing to get into any protracted political debate, can i respectfully say the content of your post is your opinion, not fact. My recollection is that the reasons for the economic downturn, mass unemployment, and the disintigration of our commumities in that decade had nothing to do with the activities of unions.

we are not on strike boxing day for money. We are on strike because when an agreement was reached with my union ASLEF back in 1996 to have boxing day as a normal working day the level of service was low enough to allow the majority of drivers to have it off as a rest day every few years. But this year TFL wanted to make ALL drivers work which would make the agreement out of date as the conditions had now changed. When it was agreed we had fewer bank holidays than we do now and where as you have been paid extra or had days in lieu or both for the added bank holidays, we have not since 1996. The reason wages are being mentioned is ASLEF told TFL if you want their drivers to work these extra days (remember when we agreed to work boxing day as a normal day it was when the situation meant most driver would have that day off)Then TFL are gonna have to pay for it and ASLEF said triple pay. TFL rightly said no, but that was only our opening offer and we expected to be negotiated down but instead of TFL coming back with a counter offer they ran to the press saying ASLEF are demanding triple pay for working boxing day when it was agreed it would be a normal working day. I will try and put this is simple terms:
You agreed boxing day to be a normal working day with regards to money. When this was agreed the company would run a normal service on boxing day (sunday service) meaning fewer trains thus fewer drivers required. But now TFL want ALL drivers to work boxing day and still dont want to give the extra money even now they have moved the goal posts.

I think its TFL who are trying to have their cake and eat it.
