Lose your arguement with the public and thats not what you want.

anybody taking industrial action will lose the argument with the public.

This isn't France...where people support other folks' grievances.....

this is the great YuK, where people are only interested in self.

[Witness driver attitudes to potholes, and LA's not repairing them instantly, if not sooner?

The motorist would rather money spent on potholes, than on front-line services which they don't directly receive.

They'd much rather not risk damaging their precious alloy wheels, or rock-hard suspension suited only to billiard-table road surfaces...]

But even national railways have had to resort to strike action, eh?
No, I don't think all other drivers are idiots......but some are determined to change my mind.......

Yep and they are mostly in the wrong too. Network rail staff have jusr been offered 5.2% which is possibly the biggest pay offer the whole industry will see this year and yet the RMT think this is not good enough so are going to ballot for strike action. Thats wrong true.

Now lets get onto stigys point about drivers getting 'one under'. Yep this abbhorent but how often does it happen? Not many times per year thats for sure.So that cannot be brought into the discussion on context of thus tube strike.

Now lets get back to the OPs point about seeing people in the tunnels and such like. Now having been to NY and their system they have whole communities who live in the subway down there and the drivers just get on with it as they realise its part of the job.

Now i love our underground and i love how we staff it so well but having been round most of europe and a lot of the world they all seem to manage with less staff and they get on with it. Why cant we?

This strike action is because they wont get extra for sunday but will for the following 2 days which are deemed holidays. Bite the bullet i say

Thats operations and customer services. One part of Network Rail.
Maintenance had already agreed a Nov RPI + 0.5% a while back.

The operations deal on the table from network rail is dependent on other conditions. This includes amongst other things a no strike agreement for the olympic games.
The union quite rightly wishes to discuss this further for clarification in the new year.

So they are going to try and hold them ransom for the 4 weeks overall that both olympics are on for?

I dont think that is too bad given that its for the benefit of the uks whole image around the world for THE most prestigious sports event.

    Brilliant.

  • I don't think it's four weeks, it covers a period of 3 months iirc.

I think there is concern about the company doing a 'cull' while they've got free reign.

Personally I think they should have just taken the offer, it's very good.
  • Those who strike for anything other than safety can gtf as far as I am concerned.

You didn't strike on safety which is more inportant than pay IMO

I have no real issue with people striking as a last resort when negotiations break down but I am interested as to why you work 40 hours per week yet only get paid for 35. How does that work?

I worked on Xmas and New Year for 15 years in a row. I knew that was a possibility when I started my job, if I had wanted to guarantee time off I would have changed jobs.

2.5 hours are unpaid breaks per week 5 days x 30 minutes
& 2.5 hours per week banked to extra annual leave days

Also its not the union holding london to ransom its TFL. They have the monopoly in London for all transport and roads so can and do charge the public extortionate fares. But cary on siding with them.
Finally someone has said it.Well said
