Boxing day tube strikes

Before everyone moans about tube drivers striking on boxing day. I would like to explain it from a drivers point of view.

First point to clear up is the amount of holiday we get.
we get 8 weeks but that included all public holidays and we work 40 hours a week and only get paid 35 so those extra 5 hours per week go towards the 8 weeks.

Why not work boxing day?

On the tube we dont get to decide when we have our holidays they are allocated on a period based system {the weeks in the year are divided into periods 1-13}. Period 4 may have xmas off but the other 12 do not. Assuming you start period 5 the next will be 6,7 etc until it rolls back to 5. So again assuming you started work at period 5 you have worked and waited 12 years until you got Christmas off. So you have done your 12 years without spending it with your family but now this year finally you get to be there and suddenly your employers change the rules and you have to work. Is that right?

triple pay
Its a negotiation and we started high but who doesnt when negotiating?

Makes no odds to me. Don't live in Londonistan and chances are won't be frequenting the place soon.
So go ahead, knock yourself out. Strike all year round if you like.

PS: the usual deal for a bank holiday working if it's not your shift is double time + lieu day off.

  • Those who strike for anything other than safety can gtf as far as I am concerned.

Funny how you were perfectly happy to accept the terms of employment when the job was offered to you if they are that poor (which they aren't). And you only notice they are poor terms over public holiday periods so you have to strike to give yourselves an extended break.

And you wonder why people couldn't care less about the 'drivers point of view'.

And then because you dont get what you want you stop negotiating throw your toys out the pram and ruin everyone elses plans.

you get paid 13 times a year and you get paid handsomely for it too.

go on - let everyone else in on how much you earn..

And if we are really honest most of the tubes nowadays dont even need drivers do they ;)

Ryan, sorry i don't have sympathy. So what are you really striking for? You want to start high and then hold people to ransom?

You are negotiating with other people salaries who need to go to work on Boxing Day.
  • Ryan,

Can you get a better deal than your current job with a different employer?

Hold on Ryan I need to rummage, ah found it, the worlds smallest violin to play the worlds saddest song................

How much do you earn average wise in driving a tin can through a tunnel, with 8 weeks holidays a year were most people have 20 days + bank holidays, you have generous health care (Griffiths House still open?) and a decent pension scheme final salary if you are lucky. Also are you a driver on the central line where the driver does not work half the time as its automated.

Give it a rest and get with the real world and have you mentioned that the free travel for you and your partner is worth about 6k a year?
