Then are you narrow minded and short sighted. If you are in a comfort zone your not pushing yourself, which means you've lost drive and motivation. comfort zone is the problem with JSA etc because people can stay in bed till 2pm and mope around the house.

Oh get a grip eh...just because I don't want to 'push my comfort zone' by working with MH patients (and who probably wouldn't want me there anyway as I would feel uncomfortable) doesn't mean I have lost my drive blah blah drivel drivel

And I am short sighted yes, but my corrective eyewear sort that. But I am not narrow minded.

predudice intolerant bigot spring to mind. Mental illness can strike anyone at anytime without warning so just think about such things before you condem those worse off than you.

It's condemn (good to see the Uni has served you well) and yes, mental illness can strike anyone at anytime - does that mean you have to like it and embrace it? err no

And I can think of a fair few people with MH problems who are way 'better off than I am'.

My elderly father has vascular dementia and he has serious needs and requires full time care. I am appalled that someone would feel that they should not have to work with people like him as it is outside their comfort zone.

Still, to get back on topic no you don't have to do the New Deal, you will however have to find yourself a job instead. Probably the best thing really if you are picky about what you do as that way you can choose where your comfort zone is (or at least until you run out of money and have to take anything).

I have always fought against being prejudiced by the sensational press about people being too finicky to work..I fear my liberal views may be misplaced.

With all due respect....I wouldn't want to work with mentally ill people either. Not everyone can/wants to deal with MH patients particulary if the MH issue is severe.

Alot of people feel uncomfortable around mentally ill people.

Sorry you feel this way as you've been working with people with some form of mental illness all your working life. One in four of the general population will experience mental ill health at some point in their lives.

AS an aside I am a volunteer for a charity working with people with disabilities both physical and mental. In many cases it is quite impossible to tell who are the people volunteering and who are the people referred to us for support.

Oh for christ sake I am getting completely taken out of context.

I meant that I would not feel comfortable working with patients who had serious mental health issues - I am talking about ones that require long hospital stays.

Now if I offend anyone then I commend you for not going through your life and living it in a serene manner and not having thoughts or passing comment to your partner about someone you see/meet who is different.

Or rather I would but no one lives their life like that.

Who knows, I may get alot out of working with people with serious mental health issues but I doubt it very much, I shouldn't feel as if I 'have to push my boundaries' and I am pretty sure they wouldn't want me there.

I made a comment and I refused to be jumped upon as if I am a pariah.

Are they all in hospital at the same time looking for me to be there? No

I am very well aware of the statistic...but thanks
  • I think I misunderstood the original post - the OP is not complaining about being made to work with groups of MH patients, but other New Deal participants who may or may not have mental health issues, etc.
  • Well OP..................wave bye bye to your benefits

I work with people that have mental health problems (elderly) and before that for a mental health charity looking after residents that had come out a South London Hospital that had closed down.
They do take drugs you know or at least should be doing.
