New Deal: Not Interested.

I have been told to attend the Jobcentre and draw up an Actionplan for New Deal.

I don't want to take part in it, as they send you on Work Placements with the Mentally Ill, Community Service Offenders etc..

If I refuse to sign up to New Deal will I be sanctioned for the duration of the Programme, or will they cut my benefits completely.

  • What's wrong with going on a work placement with the mentally ill? I am one of the mentally ill - I've been sectioned twice, but a lot of patients in the hospitals are actually quite nice people.

I doubt if sanctions are related just to the duration of the programme

I believe the sanction will be indefinite and will apply until you take part in New Deal.

The OP seems to think that he, who is incapable of finding a job by himself and apparently has had his benefits sanctioned, is better than those who are unable to work through disability. Given his narrowminded views, I can quite understand why he is out of work! ;)

  • New Deal is one of the hoops you have to jump through to be entitled to your Jobseekers' Allowance from the Government. It is good practice for the world of work, where you also have to jump through hoops.

I think you will be refused JSA until you comply with the New Deal programme.

With all due respect....I wouldn't want to work with mentally ill people either. Not everyone can/wants to deal with MH patients particulary if the MH issue is severe.

Alot of people feel uncomfortable around mentally ill people.

But how do you know that until you try? If you feel uncomfortable that is a barrier for you to get over. Mentally ill people face nothing but barriers, maybe facing one yourself would give you an insight into what they have to go through every single day?

  • Surely working with people with mental health problems is not the only option under New Deal?

At the risk of sounding like a petulant teenager - why should I have to try? Why should it be a barrier that I have to get over?

I'm not getting into a huge discussion about it but I do think it was unfair that you seemed to think the OP HAD to work with mentally ill people - just because he is on JSA.

MH patients are on benefits (mostly)...should they be made to feel bad? Of course not

You are absolutely correct - of course you are;)

Methinks the OP just typed the first few in his/her head.

Of course they could just be a lazy so and so for all I know!!!!

I think people should comply with their JSAgreement, yes, and if this involves working with a disadvantaged group then they should do it. I might not feel comfortable working with people from Liverpool (for instance - I love Liverpool really!), should I be allowed to choose not to do this?

We all have preconceived ideas of other social groups, and that creates stigma. I think we should all work towards overcoming stigma, even if it takes us out of our comfort zone.
