Rang tax office back in Feb and was told to write in, did immediately. No reply so rang last week, they seemed switched on about situation but wouldn't talk to me - just told me to get OH to ring, which he did today. After being passed from pillar to post and told to ring the number I was speaking to them on  I eventually had to ring another number and was told categorically that as this is Child Tax Credit it can only be backdated for 3 months so have no claim.

Can anyone help?? What exactly have people been paid for, is it the CTC?

I believe its the Child Tax Credit Allowance that came in when married couples allowance was phased out.

Call them back again and point out that you are allowed to claim back the last six years, so it cannot possibly be Child Tax Credits but the Child Tax Allowance which was £529 per year for 3 years.

Sent mine in 4 weeks ago, not heard a peep

It is the Childrens Tax Credit that existed for a couple of years before Child Tax Credit took over.

It operated as an amendment to your tax coding, hence the reason for having to contact your local Tax Office (will be on your Tax Coding letter).....it isnt the same as the current Tax Credits.....so there's no point calling the Tax Credits helpline.

    Cheers people
Dazzer, oh ended up on the line he was directed to, but I had spoken to local tax line previously who seemed to know about it (but wouldn't speak to me) but then when he rang they directed him on, who then passed him on again. Think he ended up on 0845 3003900.

I will try local office again. Worse, they claim to have no record of my letter! Is it Children's Tax Credit or Child tax Allowance? Thank god for knowledgable peeps on here!!

I think you're confusing it with the Additional Personal Allowance for Children which was abolished on 6 April 2000.

This was then replaced with Childrens Tax Credit in April 2001, and then again with Child Tax Credit in Apr 2003.

Hi All, Thank you so much for this amazing thread! My Parents are currently in the process of reclaiming their bank charges back and then i found this so told them about it.

When I told my mother about it she had no clue what i was talking about and was very confused when i read the OP to her.

The thing is I was born Oct 1987 and my younger sister was born Oct 1993.

Both my mother and father have never claimed a tax refund and have worked since they left school at 16 (my father is now 40 and my mother is now 42)

My mother wants to ring them about this right away but has no clue what to say to them, and also got her pad and a pen ready to right a letter to the local tax office but after half an hour of it being infront of her she gave up not knowing where to start or what to write!

Any help on this would be great!

BTW are there any updates of other peoples letters claims yet?

    Thanks

This is a copy of the letter I sent my local tax office, hope it helps. Bear in mind I was able to claim for 2001-02 but I think you may be out of time for that year but still ok for 2002-03.

    Re: Children’s Tax credit 2001-02 and 2002-03

    Dear Sirs

After checking our tax codes for the above years and speaking to your offices today, I understand that the Children’s Tax credit income relief for people with children was not applied to either my husband’s tax code or mine. (My husband was the higher earner).

We would be grateful if you would organise a refund of any monies due.

For your reference our son was born on 6th April 1998 and our NI numbers are as follows:

MRS X - XX XX XX XX X
MR X - XX XX XX XX X

If you require any further information please do not hesitate to contact us, our contact number is XXXXX XX XXX .

    Yours faithfully

Thanks for you help and the copy of the letter my parents should send.

I have to say I am a little confused about what years they should be claiming for after reading child births between 1985 - 2003. Is is only 2001-02 and 2002-03?

Also, When they ring about the tax codes (as you mentioned you did in the copy of your letter) what is it that they should say the the operater?

Have you had any response from the letter you sent?

    Thanks!

the allowance was only available in 01-02 & 02-03 so they can only claim for them years. However as 01-02 was 6 years ago I now believe they have lost out on this year so they will only be able to claim for 02-03 - Please check this out as I may be wrong.

I suggest they don't bother phoning but re-word the start of my letter to say something like "please could you check to see whether the Children’s Tax credit income relief for people with children was applied to either my husband’s tax code or mine." Then you could leave the rest of the letter the same apart from listing all eligable children - I only had one!

As per my previous posts I did get a response, they sent me a claim form to fill out and after returning this form to them we got a refund by cheque.

    Hope this helps.
