  • I say it every year but thanks again for threads like these.

With the info from here, I was able to renew option 3 for 12 mths for a tenner pm too. Nice one!

  • Thanks everyone ! I just got my broadband slashed by £10 from £20 to £9.99 option 3 !:j

Anybody know if the reduced prices on this thread on option 3 costing around £9.99/mth are with the ADSL max (up to 8Mb) or ADSL2+ (up to 20Mb)?

I'm not sure anymore. Yesterday before the new contract I was getting speeds of about 17 kbps... today when the new contract started I'm down to 10 kbps:(
I also noticed that before I had a modulation of ITU-T G.992.5 today is ITU-T G.992.1 I'm not sure if that means what I think it means, that I've been downgraded on speed?
    can anyone confirm?

I'm not tech savvy enough to understand what is happening to your broadband. Assume you must have been on ADSL2+ in the first place to reach 17 Mbps.

Strange though. In link below, ITU_G.992.1 suggests max of 12 Mb downstream, consistent with what you mentioned on your modem readout and the reduced speed:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ITU_G.992.1

And in this link, yes looks like G.992.5 for ADSL2+ to a theoretical max of 24Mb:

Maybe other OPs understand this better and can explain what has happened. Given you were just increasing your useage allowance to option 3 on a new contract, surprised there should have been any technical changes leading to reduced speed now. Perhaps the switching process is not complete yet?

I contacted support, they must have done something because now my modulation is back on ITU_G.992.5:T
  • I am currently on option 3 paying £22:99 a mth am not on a contract as it ran out and they did ring and ask if I wanted to renew but as they where offering nothing I declined so I have the flexibility to be able to move as and when.

Now I have just noticed that BT has brought out the home hub 3 and wondering if this will be better than my home hub 1 which is no good at receiving a signal to my pc connected to the TV downstairs.

They say that this home hub 3 is better in that it interferes with other home equipment less so I will ring them monday and say that I will sign a new contract if they half my broadband cost for 6 mths and supply the new home hub 3.

Got to be worth a try as it is a win win situation for them and me

What you think is it worth a go?

Home Hub 3 and HH2 are wireless N (yours is wireless G). You won't see any speed benefit unless the wireless adaptor you have on your PC is also upgraded to wireless G.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)
  • Yes I understand that my adaptor will not be comparable so if I have to upgrade that aswell so be it anything to get a better connection in my home.

The walls in these ex council houses are so thick even in the next bedroom its not all that great.

Loztiggy, I can't thank you enough for starting this thread! And others for sharing!

I was all geared up to argue the toss with BT to try and get out of my contract citing the 'material disadvantage' clause due to the price rises in April. I don't actually have many problems with their service or necessarily want to leave, I just thought my existing phone & broadband deal was way too expensive and wanted to increase my broadband download limit.

I rang 4 times, spoke to 4 different people and got 4 different offers. The first 3 were pretty unhelpful (and not aware of the material disadvantage clause) and not up for negotiation, each gave me their 'best offer' - all of which were different and all of which denied that the offers I'd been given by the others existed! How can that be?

The 4th offer was the best one: 12.99 anytime calls + unlimited broadband for 12 months, which seems in line with others on this thread. I'm happy with it especially as I'm now paying LESS than what I'd been shelling out for only 10GB download and eve+weekend calls.

It's all thanks to this thread that I had ballpark figures to work from so knew if what they offered me was a good deal or not - it's a bit bamboozling when they chuck a load of figures at you and try and make you sign up to it. And also reading the comments here gave me the courage to keep ringing back until I got an offer I liked!! I never even thought you could do that.

I find it really bizarre that a huge company like BT are so inconsistent in what they offer - I can see the offers will differ depending on different customers circumstances, but I gave EXACTLY the same info to each of the 4 people I spoke to and got 4 wildly different offers - therefore it just really all depends on who you speak to and what mood they're in! It's all a bit like haggling in a Morroccan marketplace in the end...but good to know these prices aren't set in stone. :j
