wheels stolen by garage

woke up this morning to find all 4 wheels missing from my car.
on windscreen is a bill from garage for work done that i am disputing with them.
can they really come on private land and steal my wheels or have they comitted a criminal offence

urgent advice needed please

its a criminal offence
call the police
you cant just go and take property from someone over a debt
of course there are legal ways of getting goods to cover debts but taking your wheels doesnt get their money for them so its a punitive move.
bear in mind there isnt really any proof they did it(yes i know it was obviously them) but get the police onto it

the car is left sat on its undercarriage and i am concerned this may have damaged exhaust etc.

will call the police now

Definitely call the police.I'm sure they will deny it but if they are dumb enough to do that then they are probably dumb enough to have the wheels still on their premises/vehicle.
For ultimate proof you might need to get them to admit it by saying the wheels will be returned when you pay the bill.See how the police want you to handle it.

that raises the stakes somewhat as i would say you have theft and criminal damage
it really depends how gently it was put on the deck
once the police have come and checked i would be getting mates to get the car up
be worth picking up axle stands if it looks like it will be drawn out
or a set of wheels from the scrappy

neighbours saw the garage owner take the wheels . they came in a sign written van.

these boys are gonna pay now !

good news
the other thing is if your wheels dont get back quickly
its a relatively easy car to pick up cheap wheels for to get you moving

they have stolen brake pads and fittings , and both rear shockers !
