Yes - they were my boys on the pic in the Arms. They're not interested in girls at the moment, but I think that will change soon ;):D

We are still researching getting married in Gretna and we stumbled across Comlongon Castle, near Gretna http://www.comlongon.com/
We are really struck with this venue and like the idea of using it for the wedding and reception. Has anyone any thoughts on this?

  • Comlongon is another popular place to get married and Louise if she is still working there will do everything possible to help you out.

Another Castle closer to Dumfries is Caerlaverock Castle which is a Historic Scotland property. You would have to find somewhere else to have to reception but for a truely medieval wedding that is the place I would go!

Not cheap though :S It looks absolutely fantastic but sadly not possible for us :( (would have to fly a LOT of people to scotland for that and it's not cheap to have the wedding there either... ) Do love the celtic blessing ceremony (but then as a Pagan I would...)

Major problem as point out in another post that in flying nearest airports are at least an hours drive away so there is the cost of further travel. Caerlaverock is only about 30mins drive from the border with Comlongon being less and obviously Gretna is only a stones throw from Carlisle.

If you want to pay for everyone to get there why not put on a bus or something and they can start the celebrations early? I am a great believer that if I ever get married (need a different man for that, I know where I stand!!!) I would be paying for me an OH and two witnesses to go wherever we decided and anyone else would have to pay themselves if they wanted to be there and I would throw a big celebration party when I got back (no presents). That is because I think that a wedding is for the couple and not for everyone else. This has caused a few arguments between my sister and I as she had the whole thing and apparently I am a hypocrite for going to others weddings when invited - but I pay my own way and at the last I even offered to pay for our meals to help cut the bride and grooms outlay.

  • Gretna Green is very easily accessible by public transport -as has been mentioned, it's a very short train journey from Carlisle, which is the main station for trains between Scotland and England. Caerlaverock Castle is a bit more remote: if you were travelling by train you'd have to go to Dumfries and get a bus or taxi from there. Most of the photographers who cover Gretna also cover this area.

Lovely lady who will make up anything you want, assuming she can get the flowers! She asked what my fave flowers were and the wedding colours, and I was thrilled to bits with the boquets and button holes. The shop is opposite the registry office in Gretna, and they will deliver to your hotel on the day if you wish.

Nice man who takes some beautiful pictures. We had a chat beforehand and explained what pictures we wanted included, and he made sure that everyone was captured. He developed the photos straight away, so we got them the morning following the wedding. You also get a CD-ROM of everything he takes. I'm in the promo album on that site :D
Here I go again on my own....

I went to a wedding in Gretna 2 months ago, they were married at the hotel, which is opposite the anvil, lovely place very contemporary and newly re-furbed, called smithshotel, has its own website.
