Can I book the Old Blacksmiths workshop myself without going through the planner websites?
Is it cheaper to do it that way?

We are in Glasgow and I know where I want my reception.

Do you think it mad to travel to Gretna, get married and then back to Glasgow for the reception.

You can book the Old Blacksmiths directly online through their website (which is how we did it.) You don't need to use any wedding planning service at all and it'll work out cheaper booking everything direct.

Personally, I wouldn't travel on the day of the wedding! I'd find it far too stressful! We travelled down the day before and stayed at the Garden House Hotel (which is also where we had the reception and honeymoon.) There are cheaper B&Bs if you didn't want to pay out too much though.
  • hiya me and my partner are intrested in getting married at gretna green, would you be able to find out prices to get married, either late 2009 or around july 2010,also a hotel or b and b near for us to stay and also prices, i would be really grateful if you didi this, thank you very much xxx

If you google the places you want to get married you can either enquire on line or telephone then - they will send you all the info you will need including costs, ministers, registrars etc.
  • Hi everyone icon7.gif

I got engaged on Sunday & we`re planning to get married on 4th March 09. My fiance & I are paying for the wedding ourselves so we are on a bit of a budget.
We were thinking of going to Gretna Green as it`s a lot cheaper but one thing that isn`t is the recieption. The Mill Forge wants £230 for the hire of their function room before adding £22.50 per person for the meal. This is coming in at around just over £1000 for 35 people and that`s not including the evening buffet.
We live in Northern Ireland and have priced getting married here & although the recieption would be cheaper the photographer and videographer are charging ridiculous prices, so we can`t save either place. Can anyone recommend a good pub that does pub meals in Gretna or any other suggestions would be most appreciated.

    .

I think the £230 for The Mill Forge, is the hire of the actual place you get married in, the sort of chapel room itself - it's the fee for using their place to get married in. Do they charge another £230 for a function room - I'd give them a ring, don't think that's right (or I'm up the creek without a paddle!)
  • Sori, I made a mistake. The £230 is for the hire of the marriage venue not for the function room. Thank goodness, as I has calulated an extra £289.00 as well for the marriage venue. So the extra money can go towards something else. :j

That sounds about right (I'm getting married there next year);)

Have you factored in the cost of the minister or registrar?

My reception there is coming in at £1200 - but I was daft enough to go for the drinks package for everyone as well

    Hi there,

We have got our gretna wedding booked for March 2009, we are having difficulties finding a band that won't charge the earth to travel to Gretna, does anyone have any suggestions that we can try?

    Thanks, Lorna

Sorry to say this , but I live 15 mins from Gretna Green , and frankly its a dump .. The registry office is in front of a row of shops, including a chip shop, and a spar shop, Gretna itself is Very small, and some areas are quite run down , there also isnt a lot to do, ( only 3 pubs, 2 decent hotels )

If your planning having your wedding blessed over the " anvil " thats slightly better but very touristy...

I dont want to shatter anyones illusions, but it isnt a " fairytaile" Location, and if I where getting married, it would be way at the bottom of my list of venues

Lorne, if you are looking for a band you could try some from Carlisle..

Sorry for the bad revue, Please Im me if you need anymore info...

I will try Carlisle bands thanks.

I've been to gretna lots and love it, it is not a fairytale location, it is the novelty value I love, I have found a great hotel and am very much looking forward to March!
Thanks for the advice Martin! :money:
