I can def recommend smiths hotel, we got married at anvil hall then stayed at smiths hotel, was fantastic, everyone was friendly and helpful, room was great and the food was to die for:D

Had my hair/makeup done there and was chuffed with the results:j

Loved it so much we went back in december.

Hi Nell35. Thank you for your kind offer. Just a quick question if thats ok. My partner and I are looking to visit Gretna over the next couple of weeks to check out some of the Wedding venues we like. Can you recommend a couple of hotels/b&b's which are nice for us to stay in. Thank you in advance for your time.

    Smiths is beautiful but expensive!!
There's The Gables Hotel 01461 338300 which is about £99 pp (I think)
but there's also a lovely B&B Anvil View not sure of the cost but I'm sure if you phone them they can advise 01461 337613. If you go onto the One stop weddings web site they have a page with loads of numbers on!! There wonderful people but if you get them to book things for your wedding then they add loads of money for arranging it!! Don't hesitate just ask if you need more advice.
Hope everything goes well - By the Way I'm a photographer in and around gretna (not that I'm plugging!!!lol) So I can advise of other things if you need it.

  • Hey all, I'm from Gretna and see a LOT of weddings and most couples are really amazed at what you can get for your money here. Gretna is definately a great, value for money, destination as there are lots of companies competing to offer cheaper wedding packages.
You should check out the wedding bureau http://www.gretnaweddings.co.uk/ They let you build your own package and give you the prices of everything, so it's not hidden in a package. They've got a shop in Gretna and seem to have one of the best reputations. All the best!

If you would like a co ordinator at no extra cost then One Stop Weddings at Gretna also do complete packages!! It would be worth a look at their site also

Hi, just an update to my posts on this old thread. Well we did get married on 23rd May 08 at Comlongon Castle, Dumfries in the end, not far from Gretna. It was absolutely perfect and beautiful. The Castle staff made sure everything went smoothly and we didnt get at all stressed which was a miracle!!

Ellen Denner of New Era Photography (who we found through this thread!!) took our wedding pictures for us and they are absolutely lovely and Ellen was really lovely aswell and made us feel calm and did not rush us at all. We met the day before the wedding and ran through what sort of photos we would like which was great. We have had nothing but compliments about the photos!! We are really chuffed at how everything turned out, especially as a lot of it was organised over the internet and thank you Ellen for your help. x

Having read this thread and had a look at several site on packages. I think this is where I want to get married. I have been looking at a few other venues, but this looks so lovely and romantic.
    Anyway, my question is:

Can I book the Old Blacksmiths workshop myself without going through the planner websites?
Is it cheaper to do it that way?

We are in Glasgow and I know where I want my reception.

Do you think it mad to travel to Gretna, get married and then back to Glasgow for the reception.

I am pricing a coach for my guests(40 in total), a car for me and a Hummer for the bridesmaids, best man and groom travel together.

    Thanks in advance

If you telephone the blacksmiths direct you can certainly book yourself!!! It will be slightly cheaper.

Travelling down on the day will save money - but make sure you allow time for any delays. If you get stuck in traffic then you could be late and if the people you book (i.e. ministers, photographers) have other weddings disaster might strike!!!!!!!!!!!! Although most would be accommodating.
