  • Hi I'm thinking of getting married at Gretna green, where is the best place to get married and the best hotel to stay in. It's a really small wedding 5 people including bride and groom. Is it best to visit first?
    Thanks

I would recommend visiting first as you get the feel of the diferent places to get married. Quite a few people on here have come to gretna so I hope they will come aong and give you their experiences!

I work in gretna in the wedding industry so if you need any advice then just PM me.

Also why don't you phone up the wedding planners and ask for their brochures - you don't have to book with them, but it wil give you an insight to what things cost.

If you do want to go down the wedding planner route then I would recommend One Stop Weddings as they are the only planners that I know that give you full co-ordination. They actually go to your wedding and make sure everything is stress free.

I couldn't recommend just one place above others. I got married in Gretna, which was wonderful but only have experience of that place. Others could be fantastic as well, I just haven't been to them all.

I would advise visiting the town, having a look round all the various places you can get married and taking it from ther.

Order a couple of brochures online so you have a general idea of the places you are looking for.

Hi Hughie, we got married in Gretna in March, definitely visit as the quality of the hotels and offers vary greatly. We stayed in Smith's Hotel and got married at the old blacksmith's shop, it was wonderful. Smith's do some great deals for small weddings, would definitely be worth contacting them and the hotel is beautiful. Hope that you find the right venue for you, Lorne
Thanks for the advice Martin! :money:

  • Apologies for reviving a rather old thread if that isn't a done thing - but any suggestions from anyone as to the best time of year to get married at Gretna? I would assume the Japanese Gardens I have seen mentioned are better in Summer in bloom, and possibly the Anvil Hall might be better in Winter with possible snow and candlelit.... Any thoughts or experiences to share?

Having just travelled back from Gretna today after looking at potential venues for ourselves I may be able to help.

Firstly, although it's Scotland, snow is not guaranteed in winter. Rain and wind is more likely unfortunately even during the Summer months.

Today, it was lovely up there with a ground frost and bright sunshine; with all the autumn colours it was gorgeous. If it had been our wedding day today, the photo's would have been lovely;when we first visited in August however it was a horrible drizzly misty day so who knows!

Basically, you're gonna have to take a risk weather wise wherever you get married in the UK

Have you been to the Anvil hall??? I only ask as the pictures online look v nice but in truth it is in the middle of a housing estate. It is v nice inside though once the candles are lit etc but I would have to close my eyes once I left if I'm being honest.
