  • Rather than totally lay into me, because you think it is a disgusting habit cant you just see I was literally trying to help others as stupid as me?

Yes I smoke, big deal, I dont drink, and that is far more dangerous, I wonder if any of you have ever done anything you know looking back at was wrong? I have explained on here that we wont be doing it again, so surely you should be happy that telling others would maybe help the planet just a little bit more?

Yes, I was taught littering was illegal at school, but stupidly and naively just thought cigarettes just degraded into the ground. I KNOW IT IS STUPID.

Talk about being accepting of others, it's not like I am smoking in your faces or anything! Just merely trying to help others!

yes im sure other people have been fined for doing so, obviosuly there cant be someone watching every single person who could drop litter so some will slip the net

Yes looking at it there are lots. It has just never crossed my path before, if I had seen it, there is NO WAY I would have done it. I remember in the local news a man was taken to court for dropping a banana skin. That stuck in my mind!

on the fag pack isnt there a logo showing the wrapper going in the bin, in fact isnt that same logo on every wrapper for lots of food items

    eg this 1

the logo to me says put the wrapper in the bin full stop, whether or not a fine would be received shouldnt come into it
  • An apple core would degrade/be eaten by wildlife, you'll still get fined for dropping one.
i'm sure there was a case of someone fined for dropping money lol.

Yes, it's called littering. Good work to the person that fined him.
  • Nope there isn't, and as you mentioned that, it may be helpful if they did as people who are addicted to tobacco will probably take that in more than the other things that are on the packet. We seriously ALWAYS put our rubbish in a bag in the car, and never drop anything! Mad that we are so sensible about that and we weren't about this.

I am not making excuses, and I do think it is disgusting as I have actually really thought about it, but you just see them everywhere, so it seemed almost the norm?

I am just analysing why we did it. Not defending myself :)

Same with the banana skin, so are you not allowed to feed bread to ducks then? That side is just mad.

Esoog, I agree with you, as we have now been forced to think about it, and it wont be happening again, so it has stopped one person, and I am just trying to help stop it happening with others!
  • So they are able to prove who the driver of the car was at the time of the alleged offence ? How? Under which legislation?
I'd rather be an Optimist and be proved wrong than a Pessimist and be proved right.
  • Sorry to hear about that, it is easy to just forget to dispose of it properly - i always keep a half full bottle of water in the car to put my cigarette out in gross i know but i would rather that than the fine.

Although on the opposite side of things its unfair that dog owners never pick up the "mess" they leave behind so it is there for people to tread in, i even seen one do it in front of a copper who did nothing about it so i asked him why, he said that apparently they cant hand out fines for it only dog wardens can, madness! I consider dog fouling to be much more of an annoyance than a cigarette butt ok its still not nice but at least you dont have to scrape it off your shoes for what seems like hours after making the trek home smelling of poop!
  • Peter - this is an interesting point. My other half replied and said he was driving at the time, but the letter stated litter, and again, stupidly he was adamant he hadn't dropped any litter, because we didn't to our perceived version of litter. It is only this second letter that says a cigarette.

I wonder what they would do if you denied driving at the time of the offence?
