Although we don't normally recommend dealing by phone (you can't prove anything said on the phone). It may be worth a quick call to see if they will offer a deal, although they may just try to delay you (we'll get back to you on this).

  • Thanks. Just checked my account online and i've just been charged once more. This was not included in my original letter. When following up my intial letter should I mention this charge?
  • Hello, my husband and I are trying to get the charges made to us back from
Halifax PLC. They have now sent us a letter after making us wait an extra 2 weeks, asking us to call them to discuss the matter, but we think we should send the next letter (letter 5). What do we do ??? Please help, Thankyou

Yes, send the next letter. You should always stick to the timescale you put in your letters. If they say they'll get back to you after X amount of time, ignore it.

  • Has anyone else experienced this?I sent my initial letter off to the Halifax a week or so ago, requesting my charges info. I received a letter from my branch the next day saying they were passing on my complaint to head office. Then a few days later I received a letter from Customer Relations saying that they had looked into my complaint and that as a goodwill gesture they would pay me £729!!! But that the offer only stands for 14 days.I find this incredible. Remember: I haven't even asked them for anything yet. This of course makes me wonder exactly how much they owe me as I haven't received the information I requested yet. I'm going to hang out and wait until they send me the info (I've sent another letter reminding them they only have 40 days to reply)
  • This morning I received a response from the Halifax regarding me request for Unlawful bank charges.

    They have stated:-

"The amount of the transaction does not affect the cost we incur so the charge remains constant.

"You will appreciat that we have to pass on the costs for paid and unpaid items, should you use an unauthorised overdraft. It's only fair to all of our customers that we pass these costs on to the specifc account holders responsible"

They have suggested I get in contact with their personal customer complaints or call the Assistant Manager.

In my previous experience Halifax are horrendous to contact via "customer" service depts and I do not want to call the Manager as I am quite shy and do not want to be given a spin or intimidated.

Please can someone confirm that I still have a case and that I should go ahead with my claim, also should I now re-direct my correspondance to their general complaints dept?

    Many thanks

Well they certainly won't be offering you more than they owe you in illegal charges. If the deal is so good for them they will offer it again when you are in full possesion of the facts and make a claim against them.

Standard letter, don't phone but do reply with your next letter in your time frame to the complaints department.
  • Hi

I sent my inital letter requesting statements on 22nd november 06, they took almost the full 40 days to send the statements, I sent the inital letter with the schedule of charges a couple of weeks ago, and I'm just about to send the next letter threatening court action in 7 days. Someone from the Halifax called my partner yesterday and said that we were claiming for a period over the 6 years because the charges date back to November 2000. We've tried to argue that we've claimed for 6 years from the date we made them aware of our intention to claim but they're not having it. Apparently we can only go back 6 years from today! (so basically if they drag it out by a few months we'll lose money because most of the charges were from around 6 years ago!)

Is this correct? I would have thought that I could claim back charges 6 years from the date I told them I would claim.
