halifax bank charges (merged)

Hi,
Although only a small amount I have just helped my son reclaim £106 in charges from Halifax. They tried to give us the runaround but following Martins advice have caved in and the money will shortly be in his account.
I have also written to Northern Rock to cancel PPI and have successfully saved just over £10000 in saved interest and cancelled payments.
Thanks Martin.0 -
Hi
This is my first time using the forum and not sure if using the right place to do so as this box says"quick reply" but here goes anyway.
My son went over his authorised overdraft of £1,500 at a time when he was very depressed after his dad's death due to a car accident and he lost sight of everything for about a year and although the Halifax sent him letters telling him they were charging him and which bill had not been met by him he could not cope and ignored them.
His overdraft went up to £2,000 and as he lives on his own and has a mortage he has just managed to get it down to £700.
The bank charges amounted to about £500, around £35 for every direct debit that was not paid.
Because my son ignored the letters telling him the charges with which direct debit they had paid at the bottom, he thinks he would not be able to claim them back.
Can anyone give me advise on this please.0 -
I'm hoping you can give me some much needed advice.
I have had a Halifax account since the start of my degree in 2002. I had an arranged overdraft limit of £2000 which I used up to around £1000 throughout my course until this year when unforseen financial issues forced me up to the limit. I graduated in June this year and my account changed to one of their regular accounts in Septemeber without my knowledge and my first interest charge was debited. I was charged around £29 each month since.
I have found it very difficult to find a job since and have had to rely on going over my agreed limit to £2600. However around half of this is due to their charges for each transaction (£30 each time).
I've printed off my statements from online banking and worked out that of the £600 that the bank is now demanding from me within 5 days, £237 is actual transactions and interest payments and £360 are charges for going over my overdraft limit, which shocked me.
Do you think I have any grounds for claiming all or even some of these charges back? I live in Northern Ireland and I'm not sure if the legislation is different for these matters over here.

HALIFAX CLAIM Step one complete:
Hand delivered the first letter with a £10 cheque to my local branch, addressing it to the manager.
Postal reply within 36 hours, confirming that all statements will follow shortly and also got my cheque back - BONUS!
The letter was personally signed by the branch manager... does this mean that if they drag their heels, I now have an actual person to approach?
Mmmmm....
Also been approved for an alternate current account should they decide to spit the dummy out.
Will keep this strand informed of progress as and when.Still swimming for the surface0 -
The next stage is to write to them detailing the charges and asking for a refund. Templates are on this site

We have today received a cheque for £75 in refunded charges from the halifax. No messing around and a quick turnaround from our letter a week ago. Very pleased with this one. Five more to go....3 kids(DS1 6 Nov, DS2 8 Feb, DS3 24 Dec) a hubby and two cats - I love to save every penny I can!

Good for you, well done, my fast tract claim for £6500 plus interest has been acknowledged and they have until the 8th Decemeber to put in a defence, so keep you fingers crossed0

Hi,
I am very new to this site. I have been receiving the emails but haven't posted any messages before.
I have dealt with halifax for years and have received many charges also.
I read the article in the email and decided what have I got to lose?
I posted my first letter off to them but I sent it to the following address:
Halifax PLC
Trinity Road
Halifax
HX1 2RG
Has anyone else used this address and if so, did you get anywhere?
Also, can anyone advise how long it takes roughly to receive a reply just so I can keep track of them?
Thanks!0 -

Any one had any look with Halifax?
I have sent my letter off to them but heard nothing yet.
Is it no 40 days you have to give them to respond rather than 14?0 -
That is the address I have sent things to and I got my statements from them too.
