sary, betty OH wants me to go to the first slimming world class next monday night just the once to get the books and come away with all the info, will that work or do they give you some books but not all?

I was lying in bed last night thinking is fromage frais a syn? Are salt and vinegar snack a jacks allowed or are they syns? Is it dairy, sugar, no added sugar choc angel delight , are cereals weighed, is bread limited, yogs that type of stuff that are syns, is the milk on your breakfast a syn or those heb things what does heb stand for? Healthy eating balance? why is there an A and a B?
If on the weekly menu on the SW link it says unlimited eggs, beans etc why did you have just 3tbs of beans sary?

There seems to be red and green days, do I choose which day and stick with that how do I know which day is best for me? I like meat so it won't be a vegetarian day that is for sure.

Told OH about the swede and carrot topped cottage pie and he said it sound lovely (from the link for the SW menu) so will make that, can't understand how it can be unlimited but still...

OH says give it a go and let little one eat it too and see what happens...

With more concrete info I will

    Hi prudent,

Well I'm going to be posting each day's meals so will hopefully give you a bit of inspiration!
Last night's meal, the tortilla basket was really cheap - Mr T's are currently selling 8 tortilla wraps at 64p so the base of the meal cost 8p! I bought three packs so I can put two in the freezer. I didn't bother with the salad in the recipe and just put my own together with what was in the fridge so it ended up costing around 70p in total.

I think that the only way that I'll end up staying in budget is by searching for recipes and planning meals before I go shopping. I think that I'll try and stick to really simple recipes though as, not only have I got to count every calorie, I've got to count every carb too as DS is a type 1 diabetic... which could get very confusing!

Started off well today, had cereal with a chopped up apple which came to 231 cals. Don't feel as full as usual though so think I'll stick to my eggs tomorrow. I'll be back later to add the rest of the day's meals.

    Hi,

I'm not really sure where to start... I have never dieted before and have never really liked the idea but I think it's time to shed some weight. I would like to lose about 2st but have a bit of a struggle as I have an underactive thyroid. I like the look of sw and how it works but I am reluctant to pay for the meetings, is it possible to follow their plans without going to meetings?

    Thanks

    North v South Challenge
    Southern Stunners (South)
    BettyB
    Eric

Thanks Fred - In my head my start weight is 11st as that's what I weighed at the end of the month, so tomorrow AM I will post my loss (hopefully) accordingly with that start weight.

However, I dont want to give myself a headstart (feels a bit like cheating) for the N v S challenge - so if I tell you my weight tomorrow we can use that as an accurate start weight for the N v S challenge.

    Does that make sense???

I dont know - neilersmc said that you can go to 1 meeting, pay the joining feee and get the core books, so i might try that.

I was lying in bed last night thinking is fromage frais a syn?
    Not if it's fat free!
Are salt and vinegar snack a jacks allowed or are they syns?
they are synned (not too highly tho) BUT you can use syns on much nicer treats than snack a jacks!

are cereals weighed - Yep, 28g or 42g can be a HEB usually depending on what you like
is bread limited - 2 slices of wholewheat from a 400g loaf is a HEB, so is 1 slice from a 800g loaf.
But any extra slices are only about 4 syns each if you are a bread addict!

is the milk on your breakfast a syn - 250ml semi, or 350ml skim can be your HEA choice (you can measure it out and split it between cereal and cups of tea/coffe throughout the day!)

or those heb things what does heb stand for? Healthy eating balance? why is there an A and a B?

Healthy Extra A and Healthy Extra B - these are essential for calcium (A choices are dairy) and fibre (B choices are fibre or sometimes meat if you are doing Green days (where meat is limited)).

If on the weekly menu on the SW link it says unlimited eggs, beans etc why did you have just 3tbs of beans sary?

I never limit my baked beans! Love them!!!!

Told OH about the swede and carrot topped cottage pie and he said it sound lovely (from the link for the SW menu) so will make that, can't understand how it can be unlimited but still...

It's crazy I know, when I did it in summer I lost quite a bit of wegith and I couldn't belive that I was munching down pasta, noodles and shepherd's pie with no limits, but really it's very filling food with very little fat or sugar so it's good for you!

Minimins has been an invaluable source of free SW info for me, check out this thread for SW newbies: http://www.minimins.com/slimming-world/100149-slimming-world-advice-new-comers-including-extra-easy.html

they also have a long long list of syn values for those of us doing it without the book (or until we turn up at a meeting to get the books!):

    Hi there and welcome!

I dont know much about having thyroid probs but hopefully someone else here will be able to offer advice.

I do SW without going to meetings and it's easy now but it does take quite a bit of research initially - there is a lot of info on the website, google, etc

It has been suggested by some SW members that you can attend one meeting at your local group, pay the joining fee, get the books and advice and then you dont have to keep going (personally, I dont want to and can't afford to go to a weekly group)

Hope you find a plan that suits you - we are a mixed bunch here, some seasoned 'dieters' and others who are still trying to work out what works for us. All trying to lose different amounts etc. Keep posting and chatting - we all help each other!:)

Sary - do you know if I can just turn up to my local group once, pay the joining fee (and class rate?) and get the books then never go back??? seems like there might be a catch????

You can definitely do that. It does seem a bit mean, but as you pay a joining fee, as well as your first class you are paying for the pack effectively - although if you get one of the vouchers from the new Bella magazine you can get it for £4.95. There's nothing that can 'make' you go each week, other than you. If the consultant were to ever follow it up with a phone call (if you gave the correct number....) then you could just say it didn't feel right for you.

Ok so I was bored and rather than pig out I though I'd make something for later tonight. That way I distracted myself for a bit and have a healthy cheap snack for later on.

I've worked out the WW ProPoints but can add up the cals if anyone is interested.

In total this cost me 31p for the Chick peas + £1 for a big bag of carrots of which I only chopped up 4. will make soup with the rest.

    Recipe

1 can of Chick Peas in salted water (31p From Tesco world foods bit - the organic ones elsewhere were about 90p:eek:) with about 1/2 the water
    drained away.
    6tsps of Olive oil
    2 cloves of garlic
about 4-5 tsps of lemon juice that's been in the fridge for months so add progressively til you get a taste you like!

Blitz in a processor until it's the consistency you like.

I then added salt to taste which was about a tsp.

Stuck it in a tub for later.

WW calculates it as 17 ProPoints for the whole lot which I think would do 4 servings so 4Points.

Chopped the carrots up into battons and put everything in the fridge so all nice and chilled.

Cool, thanks, will pop out and buy Bella this arvo! I would love to go to a group every week but things are a bit too tight fior me money-wise at the mo.

pollocmc - good recipe! I make hummus the same way, but i drain the chickpeas completely and add some non-fat fromage frais, lemon juice and a smidge of sesame oil (gives it that 'nutty' taste!)

Just made my new fave brekkie - grey eggs! sounds horrible, but it's just scrambled eggs with mushrooms! LOL

    Correct!

I see that a lot here like eggs for breakfast. I must have been brainwashed into thinking they were bad/fatty?

Is it one yoke three whites or something you are making your scrambled with?

Nope, eggs are fab! there was a panic for a while that they are unhealthy (cholesterol worries), but the latest info shows that they are low in fat, high protein, (and high IN cholesterol, but not a cause OF cholesterol - big difference!!) They are full of goodness and fill you up for hours!
    Sales have increased apparently: http://www.thegrocer.co.uk/Articles.aspx?page=articles&ID=214581

My 'grey eggs' are just 2 whole eggs, whisked with a smidge of milk, added to a pan with chopped mushrooms and cooked like normal scrambled eggs. the mushroom colour stains the eggs grey, but still tastes fab. today I also added some wilted spinach!
