Oh dear, this is not a good day for dieting.
I've just had a delivery of some things I bought in the BHS sale, inc 3 boxes of Thorntons chocs. Unfortunately the bow came off of the wrapping on one of them and marked the paper. I then decided that I couldn't use it as a gift and would keep it for myself and DS, thinking that I could be good and limit myself to one or two... however, I didn't count on them being so yummy and ate 4 . At 64 cals each they contained more than my entire breakfast!!!
They are now resigned to the present cupboard in the hope that I'll soon forget about them, lol!
To make things worse, I also received a discount booklet for the BHS restaurant. It includes amazing offers such as 'buy any drink, and get free fish and chips'. Too much temptation, not enough willpower!
To top it off, I received an email from Dominos earlier letting me know that they were sending me a letter with '15 amazing deals inside'... oh no!
I can't bear to throw the vouchers away as there are some great deals inside, I think I may have to give them away though or the diet won't last very long!0 -
If you are thinking about doing the SW plan an even cheaper option is to buy the Slimming World magazine (£2.95) as they give an abridged version of the extra easy plan in the issue with 4 or 5 choices for each meal.
You get all the books in your joining pack for £9.95, to be honest you really only need the green book.0 -
Hi guys

Brighton Belle  An hour?!?!?! Bloody hell lass, I would have been a wee bit angry too. The most my customers have to wait is a couple of mins. 5 at tops if there's a missing packet, then i get one of the managers to get off their behinds and help out. But then that's at delivery office, not post office. Trying to imagine what post office u used? One of the local ones at a guess? Found that the queues in Ship Street used to move very fast, is that PO still there ? God I'm going back years, probably closed it down years ago :rotfl:
Puddings - I have no comment about the bed, other than the headboard got broken one night a long while ago!!! Thought I had fixed it, but was laying in bed one night about a month ago when the whole thing collapsed on my head! Was only playing poker at the time too! How disappointing!
Vix :rotfl:Leather sheets? Think that might be a wee bit cold and sticky. I did try satin sheets once, but found I wasn't sleeping very well due to the constant battle of trying to keep the duvet and myself from slipping off the bed :rotfl:
Do you remember that song from one of the earlier episodes of friends about the smelly cat lady? I dunno why but everytime I think of ure peed on bags that song pops into my head :rotfl:
Fred - Stick me down for the buckfast beauties and the 5lb challenge plz hon. Will send my starting weight tomorrow morn. And a big fat 0 on the chart plz, let's start a fresh with a new year
And finally, a big warm welcome to all our newbies, I kinda speed read through a lot as I'm a lazy cow, and just popping in to catch up.
Back to work tomorrow after a lovely 4 day break. Have asked management for ATOS referral again so that we can get the ball rolling as to my IHR then I can get another job (hopefully). Never been unemployed before but as someone who will try anything, I'm hoping I will be rather fast in getting something once I'm finally retired out of that bl00dy place! After a very long xmas period where I was using my knees at work, lots of flooding here to clean up and building my new bed :j needless to say, my knees are both killing me.
Onward and upwards!!!! Tally ho chaps, good luck for 2011 and the weight loss journey
4 Stones and 0 pounds or 25.4kg lighter :j0 -
I have just spent some time reading through this thread. I am so impressed by everyone who has committed long term.
I have had a really rubbish dieting record - apart from an epic diet to shift baby fat about 16 years ago.
I think my big stumbling block is that I really don't know how to do it on a tight food budget. I can a mange a tight food budget as I have done so for years, but I think I have too many carbs in it and not enough healthy food. I do cook from scratch and don't buy ready meals and junk foods. However as my food spends go up too much, I tend to quit.
Is anyone else dieting on a budget?
I have to feed a family of 6 on a very tight budget, because my OH is out of work still (altho' maybe not for much longer - hurrah!:j) I buy whatever is on offer in the s/market that fits in with my SW plan, so that means whatever veg/fruit is on offer (love Lidl for their prices), meat that is on offer I buy and stick in the freezer. My local s/mkt is Sainsburys, as I live in a small town, so going elsewhere entails a longer car journey, and then the added cost of travelling on top of what I buy, so I try to incorporate a trip to another s/mkt if I have to go to a neighbouring town for something else too. This week in Sainsburys they have a large pack of pork fillet chops on offer, where there are about 7 in a tray for £5, I'll split the pack up into portion sizes, and will either grill the chops, or do them in the slow cooker, making about 3 meals. They also had beef shin on offer on the fresh meat counter, at under £4 per kilo, so I bought 1.5kg, and have split it into 3 batches (the lady on the counter gave me extra bags to do this at home). I have 500g in the slow cooker now with chunky onion, swede and carrots, and a value tin of mushy peas (18p and a Superfree food with Slimming World) with a stock made with Bovril. That will feed about 4 of us (2 won't eat the beef) although it could stretch to all 6 if needed. I'll do that with mashed spuds, and extra veggies on the side.
The large bags of pasta in the s/mkts are under £4, which does loads of meals, including bolognese, pasta bakes, pasta salads, etc. Value rice is perfect as an accompaniment or as a savoury dish too. Use up any wilting veg for stocks/soups/casseroles, and buy cheaper cuts of meat, as lean as possible, and slow cook/casserole them for maximum flavour and value. Add things like pearl barley, lentils and pulses to your soups/casseroles for filling, healthy meals.
Also have a look over on the Old Style Board of the forums for many more budget meal ideas.sary, betty OH wants me to go to the first slimming world class next monday night just the once to get the books and come away with all the info, will that work or do they give you some books but not all?
I just want to check in with you that you're doing this for you, and not OH? I actually like the support that the group offers, and I'm enjoying meeting new people there - even the local Doctor's wife is there! Our consultant is a bit like Marjorie Dawes from Fat Fighters, but that just makes it even funnier! I know you're on a budget like me too, but I quite like the fact I get to have a regular night away from home that's just for me, and the £ is an investment in me, but I know it's not for everyone. You work, so I think if you like the idea of the class, you should get to go and get the maximum benefit.
I was lying in bed last night thinking is fromage frais a syn? Are salt and vinegar snack a jacks allowed or are they syns? Is it dairy, sugar, no added sugar choc angel delight , are cereals weighed, is bread limited, yogs that type of stuff that are syns, is the milk on your breakfast a syn or those heb things what does heb stand for? Healthy eating balance? why is there an A and a B?
If on the weekly menu on the SW link it says unlimited eggs, beans etc why did you have just 3tbs of beans sary?
There seems to be red and green days, do I choose which day and stick with that how do I know which day is best for me? I like meat so it won't be a vegetarian day that is for sure.
Told OH about the swede and carrot topped cottage pie and he said it sound lovely (from the link for the SW menu) so will make that, can't understand how it can be unlimited but still...
If you did Extra Easy you could have ordinary mash, but the carrot/swede mash is free on an Original (meat) day. You'd have to syn any milk used in the mash, or any gravy/thickener, but it's not huge in a large dish like that. Probably works out at maximum 2 syns for a large portion.
OH says give it a go and let little one eat it too and see what happens...
With more concrete info I will
Victory, Betty has already answered many of your questions already. I only had 3 tbsps because that's all I needed, and I couldn't have fitted any more on my plate! I buy the large fridge packs of beans now, as I'm eating so much of them. I don't tend to do the green/original days, because I like meat and potatoes, meat and pasta, meat and rice. I don't like having to think too hard about what I'm eating either (or I'm lazy?). I also want to keep food to be as 'real' as my ordinary family meals have always been, so everyone will eat together without feeling they've all been put on my diet too! No complaints so far anyway.
It doesn't look like I'll starve on that lot though, does it?
The basics are that you eat as much lean meat/fish/quorn as you want, eat as much veg/fruit as you want of virtually any kind, and make sure 1/3 of each meal has fruit/veg in it. So, for breakfast I like to have porridge, and I'll cut up a banana, or some strawberries in it, or I use the value bags of mixed fruit from Sainsburys (£1) and put a big handful of those in there. If you do the Original (meat) or Green (Veggie) days, you don't have to stick to the 1/3 rule, and could theoretically have baked potato & cheese, quorn sausages and baked beans and not have to have a side salad on a green day, and that would all be unsynned food.
The only 'sacrifice' doing the Extra Easy plan on Slimming World has is that you only get one each of the Healthy Extras (HE). So you choose 1 thing from the A list (dairy: cheese - 28g full fat/42g low fat, or 6 Extra Light Laughing Cow Triangles, milk - 250ml semi-skimmed/350ml skimmed, etc), and 1 thing from the B list (fibre: porridge oats 28g + 1 bran crispbread, 2 x Alpen Light bars, 28g Jordan's Museli, 28g Shreddies/weetabix minis/ready brek (just some choices) + 1 Wholegrain crackerbread, or Wholegrain bread 2 x 400g slices/1 x 800g slices
So, I have an allowance of 250ml of s/skim milk that I use for all my teas & any porridge I have. I make my porridge with 2/3 water 1/3 milk because that's how I prefer it. I find the allowance is enough for me. Measure out the daily allowance in a small jug/tupperware for a few days to give you and idea how much you're using. If you wanted to have a milky drink on top of all that, just use up some syns.
If you're sticking to a low fat/sugar diet, it's actually harder than you think to use up all the syns, just because you're eating large enough meals to satisfy you, that you don't need the snacks inbetween. I agree with Betty too, you'll not want to waste syns on slimming snacks, but eat real foods instead. If I want to have a mince pie at the end of the day, I really could (11 syns, so could still have a kitkat as well if I wanted). I know you really like your bread (the demon!), well you can, if you want. You could have 2 thick slices of white bread and count them as 12 syns from your daily allowance. Unlike Weight Watchers, they don't take your syn allowance away from you for being successful at losing weight, like they do with your points allowance.
I use my syns up mainly with sauces like ketchup, salad cream, oils and gravy. The food optimising book in your joining pack is the main book you need, as it has all the HE A&B's lists (remember if you do the original/green days you get to choose 2 from the lists). Just think, you could have a massive bowl of SW chips and you'd only have to syn them if you added ketchup! If you make your own burgers with extra lean mince, have side salad & SW chips (SW chips are just cooked in frylight, rather than lots of oil) it would be a free meal. It sounds amazing, but it's not. I am actually leaving food on my plate now, because I can eat so much, and I don't need it.
I'll keep listing my meal plans so you can see what I'm doing.Oh dear, this is not a good day for dieting.

What about trying to sell the vouchers on ebay, and keeping what you make to go towards some new, smaller clothes to wear? There's no harm in having a treat every now and again, but IMHO, you'd be doing the whole family a favour by spending the money you'd spend on fish & chips or pizza on healthy foods instead, that will feed you for the whole week, rather than a night or 2. If you struggle to have willpower, then seeing offers like this as a green light to indulge, because you can't pass up on a bargain will have you stumbling at the 1st hurdle. See it as a gremlin that sits on your shoulder, purposefully putting these 'offers' in front of you to make you fail. They're not exactly bargain offers, if the end result makes you unhappy with yourself... well that's how I look upon them for me anyway. If it helps I threw out a half price fish & chips voucher from the kitchen notice board yesterday, that had been there a good few weeks. :A
Puds, pass me the Brasso for my halo when you're done:rotfl:

Efrieze - really good to see youve come back. Was it a one off or are you going to become a serial abandoner?!
I hope not to be a serial abandoner - I was just in hiding for 10 days of scoffin despite declaring myself as not doing Christmas. I was still able to indulge on everything in my house that had, to date, not even been on my radar! In the end, I took it all out on the counter and ate the bl00dy lots of it just to get rid of it and stop it from "calling me" all the time. Done.
As I said, I am away for the weekend so will nto be able to be fully back on track but I did weigh myself today and I don't want to post my gain as such, although i could cope with adjusting my total lost (!!!!)
I do read most days (sometimes more) so I hope not to abandon again. I have another 50 lbs to lose by May/June please (as if asking for it is the magic solution to it happening......but what if I asked even more politely, would that help????)0 -
I would like to join the 5lbs challenge, the Southerners (this time - what was I last time???), the Women, the Englanders and any other group to help me with the motivation, please. Thanks fred.0

Hi guys
Well, day 4 on the healthy eating plan, Im sticking to it, but don't feel like its making much of a difference (Yes I know, its only been 4 days!:o)
Anyway today I had sweet cinnamon porridge for breakfast, Vanilla Activia Yoghurt for a snack and 2 x Toast for dinner with a coffee.
I haven't had my tea yet but we are having fish, mash and beans tonight. (Hubby is working nights so needs something to keep him going through the night). I plan to portion out my mash potato to 1 cup, so as not to eat too many carbs. We will have this about 1745 hours so I won't have a heavy meal sitting on my stomach when I got to bed. (And it wil stop me from pigging out later when he's gone!!:D)0 -
Half an hr Mazza, not an hr - and I should have said the sorting office (North St) not a PO. And of course I was joking about being rude - I was extremely meek and polite. Queue ran uphill to Queens Road as I left...Brighton Belle  An hour?!?!?! Bloody hell lass, I would have been a wee bit angry too. The most my customers have to wait is a couple of mins. 5 at tops if there's a missing packet, then i get one of the managers to get off their behinds and help out. The Ship street PO closed last year and uis now based in Smiths in Chruchill square:(
Big welcome more newbies:j:jI try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days attack me at once0
