Is anyone else dieting on a budget?

    Hi Prudent,

Well I'm also dieting on a budget, although this is my first week of it so I'll probably not be of much help!

I think it will be a struggle at first and I'll probably end up blowing the budget for the first week or two, but I'm planning on eating more potatoes, as they will fill you up and are pretty cheap, I've also seen some lovely recipes on these boards for them that I'm looking forward to trying.
Eggs are also really cheap (if you buy the 'value' ones anyway!), and again really filling so I'm planning on having them for breakfast most mornings.

Sure Start do food co-ops and you can get fruit and veg a lot cheaper there than in the supermarkets. I've never been, but I enquired about it and they do big boxes of fruit and/or veg quite cheaply, I think they get it from local farmers. I'm planning on ordering some soon to see if it they are good value so will have to let you know how I get on.

Hope I've helped a little! I'm sure someone with a bit more knowledge on the subject will come along with some great ideas for us soon!

    Errrr,

If I was at a WW meeting I'd be the bloke at the back all embarrassed and hoping no-one notices me there.

I thought I'd go public on my plan to lose some weight. I'm 6'1", 247lb and probably a B cup :o. My BMI has me at 32.

Some of the target weights I've seen seem utterly ridiculous like 11st12. I can remember being that weight and people would comment on how unhealthy I looked! I think 15st7 will be my initial target and see where that leaves me.

I graduate in June at age 38 and I hope to have achieved close to that loss by then so I don't look like Mr Blobby in a gown. That is my motivation. I managed to get my weight down to 16st just over a year ago but boredom/loneliness and Finals got the better of me.

I've joined WW online as can't face the meetings but will see how it goes. Been on the Wii Fit tonight so a start has been made :rotfl:

I think I should shuffle back into the dark corner now but thought I should at least say hello!

    Hi Mark,
Thanks for posting and for being so open/honest with us.
If I've read your post correctly, it means that you want to lose about 2 stone by June, is that right? If youve been on the wiifit today then at least youve made a start, same again tomorrow and youll soon begin to get in the rhythm of it.
Years ago I joined ww and went to a few meetings and sat at the back, I didnt fit in at all because I was on a totally different journey to everyone else (I was the only bloke there and most of the women appeared to need to lose only a fraction of the vast quantity that i needed to shift)
Anyway there's no need to hide away as its all anonymous and we're a friendly thread so just post whatever and whenever you feel like it.
    keep at it,
    Ted

    Welcome
Congrats on taking the first steps :T.

I wouldn't worry too much about being embarrassed when I started here this time last year i was a robust 478.4lbs

My top tip for any guy who wants to loose weight is resistance training, get lifting heavy and build up your body mass, this accelerates your metabolic rate and increases your resting metabolic rate, so you end up burning more cals just sitting about :) Works for the ladies as well but is a little bit harder for them.

I wouldn't take any notice of BMI its utter bullpat for many people

I am 6' 1" and in my early 40s and my correct body weight is 235lbs (calculated in a bodpod) with a healthy 20% body fat and will hopefully be in the 240-250lb range by the summer :)

Thank you everyone for the welcome. I will be interested in your budget diet lolly. I made a good start yesterday ... well almost. For dinner I had planned prawn salad with baked potato. This changed to a cheddar cheese salad when the cat ate the prawns!

I usually eat porridge for breakfast and just take it as it is with no add ons unless I have managed to get some berries reduced, so am hoping this will be ok to continue. I think I will reduce the portion a bit though as I have a big bowl.
Lunch an egg salad and 2 ryvittas (have eggs that need using up)
Dinner - I have some Quorn breaded fillets that need using also so will have one of these with sprouts and a carrot and turnip mash followed by a diet yoghurt. I know the breaded bit isn't ideal, but can't afford to just replace everything. I will need to use them up.
Snacks 1 pear and 1 tangerine

Going for a long walk with OH at 9am and will use DDs Wii fit later.

    Any comments/advise welcome :)

I am a member of the Uni Gym and actually used to enjoy doing the weights. I guess it's the limbo period where you haven't seen any results but have burning muscles all the time that's the hardest. I did Body For Life which if you ignore the amazing (fake?) before and after pics in the book is a really good plan for people wanting to get toned/defined. I was my fittest ever doing that but it is tough going.

You're right I would like to lose 2St by June (I'd probably like to lose more but I think that is at least a realistic target?) Having done weight training before I realise there is a point where weight loss drops but muscle mass/tone increases. Not looking to be Arnie mind.

In addition to the wii fit. I have a waterrower which has been serving as a clothes rack for a year. It's dusted down and I've been trying to build up my endurance on it for the last week. It's bloody torture mind!

I'm hoping by playing a part in these threads I'll motivate myself AND others. Biggest problem is I know what's good for me it's just finding the will power to sort it out.

Anyhoo thanks for the welcomes and I'll try and give some input on things that worked for me in the past too.

I am pleased to announce a 2.5lb loss already so well chuffed, will do it tomorrow for the real weigh in but going in the right direction, I am playing mind games with myself again telling myself I only put on 2.5lb on over xmas as it was 5 and lost half already not letting the rest of the stone dwell in the mind;)
