Hi, apologies if this has already been answered but I worked in a police control room for 10 years until January of 2011 where I had to wear a uniform - will I be able to make a claim for those years even though I don't work there anymore
    Thanks in advance

You should! My claim included periods of working for other employers. You can only claim 4 years backdated though but there should be no problem with getting that.

    Hi Guys,
Can anyone tell me what section of the table my husband would fall into and therefore how much he should be putting into the letter as his allowance per year? His is a bike mechanic (pushbike, not motor) and gets given a logo'd tshirt to wear at work.
I can't see what section he would fit into.
    Thanks in advance.

Don't worry about it. Just describe the basic job and the 'uniform' to HMRC and let them work it out. It's likely to be the basic £60 allowance.

Thankyou, you are right. I spoke to them this morning and it will be the £60 allowance.

HMRC refunded me £135 + £34 just for the asking. All I did was copy Martin's template letter and send it in to my local tax office and within 2 weeks I had 2 cheques in the post and my tax code had changed. They only seem to have gone back 3 years, but still, £170 is better in my pocket than theirs...it's easy and it will cost you 50p postage to find out.
  • I wrote to the tax office and they sent back a letter to say i couldnt claim anything as the uniform does not have a company logo on it .I work in catering so it can only be worn in the kitchen not that you would want to wear it anywhere else what should i have said???? other staff have the allowance .

    Write back telling them that:
    * your uniform is provided by the company
    * it's been provided for you to work in the kitchen
    * you're specifically prohibited from wearing it outside work

Do you wear a uniform or do you perhaps wear special / protective clothing?

How come HMRC know your “uniform” doesn’t have a company logo on it?

Did you tell them or have they been in correspondence with your employer?

A company logo can change everyday clothes, say a shirt and trousers, into a “uniform” but without a logo they are just a shirt and trousers.

Whether you want to wear them elsewhere is a matter of personal taste and not a test for tax purposes.

On the other hand hygiene regulations may dictate that you have to wear special or protective clothing in a kitchen. They would not require a logo.
