I'm abit miffed by the amount/letter my partner received from HMRC yesterday. One was saying his tax code has now changed to 820L so he now can earn 100 more tax free so that's good i get that but in a separate letter entitled 'Tax calculation 20011-12' reads " I am pleased to tell you that you are due a repayment of income tax for the year shown above. A cheque for £38.62 is attached"
Is this what he's received because of the laundry rebate letter he wrote? He has been working for that company (agricultural machinery) from 6.4.2010 and then before that with an animal feed mill from 5.9.05-4.2.10. If that amount is due to the laundry I don't get why no other years have been paid? Or is it possible they would arrive in separate letters? Many thanks in advance0 -
Thanks Mikey. Do you know, if he had got the cheque instead, would it have been for £48.40 or £242?
It would have been for £48.40. Which is the amount he will indirectly get back (plus the £12 for this year) by paying less tax in 12/13.If you want to test the depth of the water .........don't use both feet !0 -

It didn't say that? It said you were entitled to £293 extra allowance? Which means you don't pay tax on that £293 at 20%. That translates to £58.60 in cash terms. Can't explain how that then reduces to £33 however. But it was never going to be £293 in cash.If you want to test the depth of the water .........don't use both feet !0 -

What does it say in the calculation? As £38.62 is more than you can expect for a single year. A laundry allowance of £100 translates to £20 in cash terms - if he pays tax at 20%.
Read the calculation - it should explain what is included. 'Flat rate allowance' is the usual term.If you want to test the depth of the water .........don't use both feet !0 -
...will I get a refund for the previous years, it does not state in the letter?
You should get a computation + a separate cheque if you claimed earlier years. Bear in mind £60 extra in allowances per year usually translates to £12 in cash (£60 x tax rate of 20% = £12)If you want to test the depth of the water .........don't use both feet !0
