Thanks for your reply. Yes he pays 20% tax. The calculation was with the new tax code and said his tax free amount currently then 'flat rate allowance' £100 then the new tax free amount. He also received another letter today which explained abit more. However because at the end of 2009/10 once his finished his job on 4.2.10 he was registered as self employed briefly, he has been sent a 'claim for overpayment relief' form which he needs to fill in. One of the questions is 'amount of relief claimed' how is he supposed to know?!

Surely not. The calculation re the £38.62 would be a P800? Are you sure there isn't an 'adjustment' figure on it for an earlier year. As £38.62 equates to an allowance figure (at 20%) of close to £200.

I believe that is the amount of tax - not the amount of allowance - being claimed. In which case it is £20? Were there no Notes with the form?

I ment the letter that contained the new 820L tax code also had the calculation explaining why it had gone up £100. I don't know if the £38.62 has anything to do with that letter or not? It seems he will be sent more cheques for the different years. Nope no notes with the form it was just stapled to the letter regarding his diff tax years claims. Will see if the other cheques work out as £20 per year and then enter £20 as the amount of relief.

There are unlikely to be any other cheques. When they do a calculation you get a composite cheque. The cheque looks to cover at least 2 years ..... and at least one year is not refundable under PAYE because he was SA that year.

But as I keep saying - you need to study the calculation. The one that refers to the £38.62 refund.

I've just received a letter and cheque for £45.

However, my letter states that 'claims for flat rate expenses can only be considered from the 6 April onwards. Claims prior to this are considered out of date.' Obviously this is only for 4 years plus the current year, rather than the 6 years in the guide. Which is correct?

    Thanks, Paul.

The guide has not been updated for a while ...... the number of years you can go back retracted to 4 from Apr 2012.

You can only claim back to 08-09.

Hi! I know this isn't probably the right thread for this but I couldn't find a related one. Does anyone have experience of claiming tax back for an SIA license? I've enquired about it today and it's the same address as uniform tax rebate queries go to and almost the same letter (minus the info on kit). I'm happy to keep the forum updated on what happens from my end if anyone else is wanting to go for it!

was just about to ask about the 6year thing, but thanks to Mikeyorks, don't need to now!

have just had three years worth repaid, and 2012/13 tax code altered. so happy days!
  • Hi, apologies if this has already been answered but I worked in a police control room for 10 years until January of 2011 where I had to wear a uniform - will I be able to make a claim for those years even though I don't work there anymore
    Thanks in advance
