You dont get £140 you get a tax allowance of £140 off of your personal allowance.

    £26 is about right
Live each day like its your last because one day you'll be right
  • Hi,

Hi, I don’t have a uniform as such but I do have PPE which I have to wash and maintain myself. Does this count?

Also, does anyone know how to cancel this allowance if needed?

Yes, anything that your employer has given you and can’t wear outside of work (i.e. preferably logoed) counts. I claim for my branded hi-vis etc.

It automatically continues year on year and as far as I am aware automatically stops when you leave your current employer. On the off chance you need to cancel it without having changed employers you just need to redo the online form you did to claim it in the first place for the current tax year with the allowance reduced to represent the proportion of the tax year you had it for as it supersedes anything previously (automatically) submitted.
E.g. If you wanted to stop claiming a standard flat rate of £60 per year in September (ie 6 months into the tax year) you would do the claim for £30 instead of £60.
(Personally I’m not sure I’d worry too much about remembering to change it though unless you’re claiming a lot of other things though because even the full £60 only gives a rebate of £12 - ie 20% of £60 - so I’m sure they have more profitable cases to verify.)
  • I've tried searching but not come up with an answer - I've just started working in waste management/litter and have a uniform that needs a LOT of washing. Waste management doesn't appear on the government list, does that mean it's the same £60 allowance that someone working in a bank branch can claim?

Can I check.... If you start work midway through the year, is the Flat Rate Expense allowance pro-rata'ed?? I.e. do you only get half the allowance if you work half the year?  It would seem to be entirely reasonable that it is, but 'reasonableness' rarely features in HMRC and also, it then goes against the term of 'flat rate'.

I've tried hunting everywhere on the website and future years will be no issue, just the starting/ending year.

    TIA,  Dome
  • Don't think so.

Does it matter though if it is fair enough if it isn't it benefits you.

I agree, I just dont want to be asked to pay it back.  You'd think the fact that anyone that claims a FRE would go through this at least once, I'm amazed there isn't more guidance on it.
  • Hi, I’m looking for advice and anyone with similar experience. I’ve applied for the uniform rebate going back 4 years. I’ve had my tax
code changed for future as expected. However, I’ve today received an HMRC letter advising of the flat rate expense refund for only the last tax year 2020-21 - with no mention of refund processing of the previous eligible tax years?

Should I assume that HMRC are processing the claim one year at a time and just wait or should I contact them?

Does anyone have experience of this?

    Thanks!
  • Sometimes HMRC include several years in one calculation (usually only for small claims like this).

What does the calculation for 2020:21 show?

The overpayment for each year is usually carried  forward until the final year when the total repayment is made.
