I wrote to the tax office asking for my brothers code to be amended for this year to claim laundry expenses and to claim for all previous years he was entitled to and could he have it in the form of a cheque. All he has received is £11

Is it possible that he only paid a small amount of tax those years?

hi everyone just quick question at my work we all have to supply and wash our uniforms at work. some of us have been successful but myself and others have not the tax office saying that we do not have logos but none of the staff have logos .would appreciate any advise thanks tom.

Depends on your uniform. HMR&C nearly always get this wrong because they like to say that you uniform must have a logo before you can claim tax relief. This doesn't need to be the case as long as your work clothing is clearly workwear.

e.g. if you wear a uniform such as is worn by a nurse or cabin crew, or if you have to wear clothing that you would clearly only wear because you are required to a work you can claim. E.g. if you wear high viz gear or have to wear a apron as a part of your uniform.

What a logo can do is turn what would ordinarily be normal clothing such as a plain shirt into something HMR&C would consider to be a uniform.

Then you need to study the calculation that you also received? Quite possible it unearthed a small underpayment on one or more of the years that was too small to be collected otherwise. But will be taken into account if you ask - as you did - for the years to be recalculated.

I sent off a letter on my husband's behalf on 6th April (annoyed now I missed the 2 years by a couple of days!)

Today he has received a letter confirming the adjustment of future years tax codes and that the 4 years backpay is added into the tax code.

He was owed £12 for each year and has had £242 added to his tax code for this year.

I don't quite understand the difference between the "total repayment" of £48.40 and the "adjustment in code" of £242. They multiplied 48.40 by 100 and divided it by 20. I know it's something to do with a percentage, but can anyone explain to me how this affects his income tax for the year. Thanks

He presumably earns less than £42475? And therefore pays tax at 20%?

The £242 is the extra he's allowed to earn without paying tax on it at 20% ..... as it's added to his personal allowance. £242 @20% is the £48.40 ...... in cash terms?

Thanks Mikey. Do you know, if he had got the cheque instead, would it have been for £48.40 or £242?

My partner asked about this at work and was told that if he claimed he would be responsible for doing his own tax returns in future.
Is this correct? Thank you for your help. JGL

This rings alarm bells. All the tax office does is advise your payroll of a new tax code for you, so minimal work for them.
