On Saturday I got a letter from the tax office informing me of a change in my 2012/13 tax code which now includes an allowance for washing my uniform :j. On Tuesday I got a cheque (P800 calculation) for years 2010/2011. So am I right in thinking I've still got the cheque for 2011/2012 to come, all the circumstances for last year are the same. Do all letters/cheques get sent out separately becuase they are all different tax years?

No. All 'old' years are usually combined within the P800 / cheque.

But - they may not have the 11/12 pay / tax details yet as the employer has until 19th May to get them to HMRC.

  • Hey

I got this letter from hm revenue n customs and they're saying that I did not have " flat rate expenses" included in my tax code! I don't know what this means!! And it goes on to say about the amount of medical benefit that I claimed. So I'm really confused and any help that u could give me would be lovely!!

You weren't getting the tax relief so ordinarily you would have been due a refund.

However you were also receiving some medical benefits you weren't taxed on. So the tax you owe on the medical benefits is more or the same as the laundry allowance, so any tax you would have got back is offset against the tax you didn't pay enough of.

There is no form. You write a letter as indicated at post #1 of this thread.

Or you can follow this from the main site :-

If HMRC won't bite because they consider the clothes can be worn anywhere ..... there isn't much you can do. You can write again to say others in the same employment have the allowance? But they may remove that rather than handing out more?

I wrote to the tax office asking for my brothers code to be amended for this year to claim laundry expenses and to claim for all previous years he was entitled to and could he have it in the form of a cheque. All he has received is £11
