Do they check with the company to confirm that it is mandatory?
There's evidence in other posts that they have written to employers - in particular where there aren't consistent claims within that employment.
I can only point you (first sentence) at the requirement :-

Hi have just spoken to the Tax Office re: uniform rebate - they are telling me that the timescales for reclaiming has been dropped from 6 years to 4 years ? Is this correct to your knowledge as your section on reclaiming uniform says 6.
They are also saying that as I filled in a self assessment for the one year that I can claim for now (dont ask ..... I was previously self employed before being employed and a year or so later after being employed they asked me for self assessment and said I had to fill it in even though I was solely PAYE) so they are saying I cant have the one year claim back either - the advisor actually said well it is only worth £12 so decide if you want to appeal once we have written to you.
What do you think I should do?Debt Diary: Im not going to be an Ostrich anymore -LBM - 16/1/12 /0 -

As this thread has been running for 7 years - things change? Yes - the timescale has now been reduced to 4 years wef the start of this month. Plenty of recent posts indicating that. They are also saying that as I filled in a self assessment for the one year that I can claim .................. it is only worth £12 so decide if you want to appeal once we have written to you.
What do you think I should do
Forget it. It's not worth £12 for the hassle. You can't 'appeal' ..... as there's nothing to appeal against. They will give you the single year you say you're entitled to. But you're out of time for amending your Sa Return therefore you have to make a claim for 'overpayment relief' ....... see this link :

....... not worth it for £12 I would suggest. If you want to test the depth of the water .........don't use both feet !0 -
Hi thanks for your reply - I sent my letter at the beginning of March - to my knowledge the tax year starts at the beginning of April.
Again sorry for my ignorance I did not read back over 50+ pages on this forum so did not know that the timescales for re-claiming had been changed. I had originally taken all my information from the "Reclaiming" section which states 6 years and not this thread.
My letter to them asked for a repayment back from April 2005 - March 2007 - apparently I am being allowed none back and it was the HMRC who stated that I could appeal once I had received my letter but felt it not worthwhile as it was only for £12.

You have me confused. You clearly stated :I filled in a self assessment for the one year that I can claim for now
But if you claimed in March then 07-08 was still available (until 31st March) at that point. But your 'claim' was only up to 06-07 ..... and that year expired end Jan. So there is no claim you can make? You were out of time for all years.I did not read back over 50+ pages on this forum
...... you didn't need to. HMRC have been signalling the dip from 6 years to 4 .... for at least the last 2 years. And there's plenty of posts over the last few pages re-inforcing the shortened timeframe. The main article on reclaiming was last updated 6th Dec 2011 ....... at that point 6 years were still available. Although the article might sensibly have pointed out that 2 years were set to be lopped off between Jan - March 2012.If you want to test the depth of the water .........don't use both feet !0 -
Personally I would send the Coding Notice back now and ask for the refund via cheque (with the explanation as above). That way only the 12/13 allowance is prejudiced if you earn below the (enhanced) personal allowance.
Thanks for this. I called my tax office and they've agreed to send me a cheque and a new coding notice.Sealed Pot Challenge #239

At the same time as asking for a refund for myself, my husband wrote also (he also claimed from 2005 - to date)
We have received a PAYE coding notice for him for the year 2012-2013 it states his personal allowance of 810L has been changed to 822L (+£120 Flat Rate Job Expenses)
Is this amount for this year alone or would it include previous years rebates? - we did ask for a cheque for previous years but having now read back some pages I see some people asked for a cheque and got a rebate in their tax code whilst others got a chequeDebt Diary: Im not going to be an Ostrich anymore -LBM - 16/1/12 /0 -
Is this amount for this year alone
The difference between 810L (£8105) and 822L (£8225) ..... is the £120. As the P2 (Coding Notice) should show? So that is the allowance for the current year only.
The arrears (expect from 07-08 inclusive, if the claim was prior 31st March) should come in the form of some P800 calculations + (separately) a cheque. The amount to be refunded will be the figure on the final year P800. You can't add the P800s together ..... HMRC will already have done that in the form of 'adjustments' carried forward from the earliest year calculated. If you want to test the depth of the water .........don't use both feet !0 -
quick question,do you have to still be in work to claim?0
