No. But you need to have paid tax in the years you claim for. And - you can now only go back to 08-09 inclusive. If you want to test the depth of the water .........don't use both feet !0 -
Hi my partner wrote to hmrc regarding uniform rebate, he included all info regarding dates & addresses etc of his work places as well as his full name and address. The trouble is he didn't include his N.I number or current tax code, will he still hear back from hmrc or not? Many thanks0

I used to work in the tax office (sorry) and when I was there we could trace a taxpayers national insurance number from their name and address. It took them a month to reply back to my brother regarding his laundry expenses claim, so if you havent heard after that length of time just give them a quick ring.0 -

I have taken the advice of so many of you regarding applying for a tax rebate due to wearing a work uniform. I wrote a letter on the 29/1/12 providing all details etc, as did my partner to the Inland Revenue. He received notification within 5 days explaining that his tax coding already took into effect his laundry costs. I however have not received a reply. I forwarded another letter on 16/4/12 together with my original letter stating that I would like a response to my application. No reply. I have attempted many, many times over the 18 weeks to phone the Inland Revenue and have just been placed in a queue waiting for a non existant adviser! Does anyone know what else I can physically do to obtain some sort of response?? Both letters were sent by recorded delivery so were obviously received.:cool:0

The most surprising thing about this post is you received a response within 5 days, in fact I think this is incorrect!
I have some informal data on this and I'd say in general HMR&C answer most letters within 2 months, usually nothing before 2 weeks (which makes sense when you consider how long it's going to take for a letter to get there each way). A large amount of the balance are then dealt with in month 3. The rest can take 6 months or longer (still counting).
I suspect some of these get lost or held up on someone's desk who doesn't know how to deal with it or is on holiday, or sick. If anyone's got any better reason for this variation I'd like to hear it.
The best think is what you've already done, send it again. Typically I wouldn't expect a response inside 4 weeks so you may have to wait longer.0 -
Just a quick question, I applied for the uniform'laundry allowance and requested the 'back payment/tax rebate' to be paid by cheque, this was all back in early March.
Today I received a new tax code which included an additional £60 allowance for laundry costs. Does anybody know if that means I'm unlikely to receive a cheque? Or could a cheque possibly arrive from a different department at a later date. I find all this a bit confusing. Thanks in advance for any help. When Life Throws You Lemons Make Lemonade0 -
I got my rebate last week. It took 9 weeks and the cheque was sent out separately to the new tax code.0
