ce allowance IF you can get it !!!!
im Forces, so obvioulsy have a uniform. it is NOT washed by the employer. There are NO free laundry services. Single accommodation has WMs in the blocks - but you have to supply your own deterants and you pay for the WMs in subscriptions. Married personel get no help.
Tried claiming the standard £60/year and was told "you dont qualify - Officers get an allowance for uniform and other ranks are provided fee laundry services". Completely not true - I have not had a fee laundry service in my 23 years service (with the exception of on opporations in Iraq/Afghan). I challanged it - and they have passed it on to a "specialist" to look at - this Was Feb and Ive not heard anything back - not holding out much hope either0 -
Just a quick thank you to all who have mentoned this allowance on MSE. Sent off the letter for my husband approx 4 weeks ago and recieved a cheque today for £44.850

I've just claimed my laundry rebate but only got £60 back so I'm wondering how other people are getting such large payouts.
I'm not wishing to sound ungrateful but I explained to the tax office that I work in the paint industry and so I can't wash my uniform with my usual clothes in case I contaminate them with paint.
Therefore I have to do a "work wash" once and sometimes twice a week.
They said they have allowed me the amount due to textile workers. That doesn't sound like anywhere near such a dirty job to me.
Is it worth appealing?0 -
only got £60 back s
I explained to the tax office that I work in the paint industry
how, and how often, you decide to wash your clothes is utterly irrelevant
what do you mean by "paint industry"?
as set out in post #1, the rebate is based wholly on what industry you work in , if you got back £60 then you appear to have been given 4 years worth of rebate at the textile workers rate
look at the list on the link at post #1 and decide for yourself if there is a more applicable industry in your case0 -

The allowance for uniform washing on its own will not result in large payouts. Anyone receiving a large payout will find that the majority of it is down to another reason such as being on a BR tax code instead of a normal tax code.
The highest allowance I can see for uniform washing seems to be around £140 which would give a tax rebate of £28. 4 years of £28 would see a rebate of £112 so not large at all.0 -
Just had 4 and a bit years of rebate and £44.49. Nice for not doing anything other than writing a letter!0

I think the ones with big payouts are not for real...No debts. No credit cards. No store cards. No mortgage. No CCJs. High credit rating intact. Living frugally. Want to start business soon. Trying to keep head above water; while standing on own feet; staying within the law; and not falling into debt. Looking to raise income, who isn't?0 -

By paint industry I mean I work for a company making paint and so get quite a bit of it on my uniform - which means I don't want that paint to transfer to my own clothes in the wash and therefoe have to wash it allseperately.
What with yours and the other two replies I got I would thnk that's probably my lot, thoughI will check the list mentioned to check.
Thanks for your time.0 -
