Have you tried here ....... http://www.heatingoil.co.uk/

They are consistently cheaper than Boilerjuice where I live (North Yorks).
    Current offer is 30p/ltr.
  • For people in the Kent area ..... I've just got some quotes for around 2000 litres and most of the prices were around the 36ppl mark.
However, the cheapest I could get was with fueloils, at 33.85ppl ... the cheapest by over 2p !!!
    Big thanks for that

I have been trying to find on the web for ages, information about domestic oil. We will be moving into an area which has oil, rather than mains gas. We are trying to find price comparisons between gas and oil, this is proving difficult as oil is always quoted in volume (litres) and gas is quoted in energy terms, (BTU or KWH), so it is difficult to do a proper comparison. We wanted to know whether it was worth paying to have the conversion to mains gas, or even to go to LPG instead. We can then make a decision on whether this company that you mention is the goer or not. Any ideas??
We have lived in 3 bedroom, well insulated, bungalows for the last 10 years and seem to average about 2000 ltrs of heating oil per year. there are only two of us in the house and we shower rather than bath. All our heating and hot water is controlled by oil.
Price in Norwich 02/02/09. 37p per litre ex vat. So with VAT we are looking at around £700 per anum at theese prices.
Hope that gives you something to go by.
  • I run a little consortium (oil) around where I live, just a few neighbours but its surprising what a difference it makes to your bargaining power when buying.

It was very easy to set up as all I did was suggest it to some of them, word then passed around and lo and behold our little group was born. When someone needs oil they email me, I then send an email to everyone else with a deadline.

I have a list of six local suppliers that cover our area and I ring them all asking for a best price and then pass this back to the neighbours. I then call the supplier back and place the orders giving them the names and telephone numbers so that the supplier can arrange payment (I don't get nor want to get involved in people's finance arrangements).

In early January when we last placed an order prices were rising and were about 41p, we got ours at 34p, one of the neighbours saved £140 for that one delivery, so you might imagine he was very happy! That time we got orders together for 5000 litres which was split between 5 people, ranging from 500 to 2000 litres. Also our experience is that Boilerjuice has not really been competitive any time we wanted to place an order.

It takes maybe 1/2 an hour of my time in total, I keep a record of the prices as I make the calls and that's it. I get nothing else out of it except a thank you, but I now know and enjoy the company of a few more of my neighbours than I did before. All it took was passing the message around, it really was that simple.

I hope this provides a bit of incentive to one or two others to start their own little group.

I've just ordered 1000l - 26.6p from Total Butler - the next best price I could achieve was 30.9p from our local buying group.

Downside is we've got to eke out what's left until 10th of March.

Mains gas generally cheaper than oil - just depends how near the mains you are and cost of connection/new boiler.
    LPG very expensive. avoid!
If you're considering investing a lot anyway, whether gas, oil whatever, consider air or ground source heat pump. Expensive up front, but if you're planning on staying there years and going to spend anyway, it's worth considering as you'll save on running costs and future-proof yourself against future rises in prices.
Oh, and save the planet too!

These groups are great but need to be local. The whole advantage is for the tanker driver to deliver a whole truckload to a single village/area (OK neighbouring villages). So 'Lincolnshire' is a bit big.

They take a bit of work/organisation too.

However that's not to say they aren't a great way to increase your buying/negotiating power.
