We have used half our oil bought in November for 41.5 pluS VAT, now do we buy another five hundred litres tomorrow, or do we wait until we need a tank ful in February?? Anybody got a crystal ball?

I was quoted 34.8p yesterday - it was on a boilerjuice buying weekend so I thought i'd buy 500 litres, even though the tank's half full, as the fluctuating prices worry me (paid 55p for 1000 litres in the summer and still feel the pain).
You seem to be using a fair bit of oil OAP? You've probably got a bigger house than me, but I've still got half a tank left from August. Are you sure there isn't something wrong somewhere?

Well hope not, we have Trianco boiler, 7 years old, stats on all radiators, loft insulation, cavity wall insulation, all doors double glazed, (outside) rads on from 8.15 am to 10.15 in morning, and usually five till nine thirty at night, however, been so very cold, heating on at 4 and off at 10! Boiler not turned up very high at all, number 2.

However, we are in a dormer bungalow, rad in downstairs bedroom not used so only on very minimum, dining room door closed and rad off, but we have two rads in hall, large lounge with double rad and single rad, and still have to use electric fire at moment for back up, double rad in breakfast room, single rad in kitchen, two upstairs bedrooms rad in each and two bathrooms with heated towel rail in one and rad in other, so there is a fair bit to heat up.

Next door fill their tank three times a year, we just do it twice, usually February and October/November. During day when very cold, stay in breakfast room and use little convector heater which gets us warm very quickly and a walk on the beach with the dog makes us warmer than we get in the house!!!

It is not really a huge house, but living by the sea when the east wind blows, whatever we have as insulation does not completely keep out the cold, as it blows straight at us, when no wind the house stays warmer much longer.

Thanks for your concern though, always appreciated.

    Regards oap

Hurrah - someone else locally ordered through boilerjuice over the weekend, so price ended up being 33.8p.
I don't envy you that cold easterly wind today, oap - I concur with you about dog walking, I'm always boiling hot for about an hour after taking my scoundrel spaniels out. I've often wondered why we can't simply harness their energy for all our fuel needs...

    Hi
I currently order 2 bottles at a time from Calor direct (not on a contract) and I pay £87.49. I am thinking of ringing round to get a price for an order of 10 bottles.I think you have to play one off against the other to get a better rate. If there are a number of residents on propane/lpg then I suppose you would have a stronger negotiating power.Bottles seem to cheaper....is this correct?
    Regards

I think it varies a lot I wouldn't have a big tank as you are usually tied into a contract with one supplier and have no bargaining power at all. There is quite a bit of competition with the bottles where I live with a fairly diverse range of suppliers from builders merchants, coal merchants, hardware type stores, garages and the specialist gas suppliers. Its always worth ringing around and also ask your friends what they have been paying. £87 seems pretty high so I would definitely shop around next time you need some. Be careful about having lots of bottles delivered at once as you then become a target for thieves so make sure you chain all the bottles together so that they can't make off with individual bottles.

I've noticed according to the boilerjuice price graph, that the price has shot up after the gas crisis.

What to do, what to do, I need around 500 litres, but can survive until nest October ish, but I think the price will have gone up by them again......... what do any forward looking price analysts think?

Big range of prices today - heating oil.co.uk 33p (but don't deliver in our area) Countrywide 40p but best I could get was 36.31 from Total Butler, most of the others were quoting 38p.

Also there is very little capacity for delivery before 5th Jan so if you're running low get ordering to avoid a chilly christmas.
    Thankyou so much for this.

I just went to a local place and they were 41.4p. SSMotors which deliver to here (and normally the cheapest) were 39.9p, boilerjuice were 40.4.

But Total butler came in at 36.5p. Never rang them before, I will be again.

    For 700 litres btw

Boilerjuice doesn't work up here.... :(

Oil in the Hebrides with Scottish Fuels is currently 39.45p a litre. I've ordered a fill today, it's definitely cheaper than the 61.5p I paid at the end of September
  • For people in the Kent area ..... I've just got some quotes for around 2000 litres and most of the prices were around the 36ppl mark.
However, the cheapest I could get was with fueloils, at 33.85ppl ... the cheapest by over 2p !!!

Just ordered 1000 litres at 36.5 plus vat, for delivery this Thursday 12 Feb. This was pretty much the same with all those I rang, except for one which was 34.76 plus vat however, we have hung on and need it this week and they are so busy could not promise delivery before next Monday, so had to go with the 36.5, however, shows it can be done, and who is making the extra profit, hmmmm?
