But you're not giving care when the disabled person is in hospital are you? The kids rules that their parents can keep getting the DLA for 12 weeks is absolutely crazy, this is money for the childs day to day care/mobility needs, what exactly is it being spent on for the 12 weeks that junior is in hospital? End the madness, no wonder this country is going to tits, it's not that no one has respect for carers (my sister is my carer) but that people expect hand outs for something they aren't even doing!0

However, apart from the the one occasion when he was in Intensive Care, I always carry out approx 90% of his care needs - I feed him, change him, give him his oral drugs (his daily meds, plus whatever the hospital have prescribed), etc. I also always stay overnight with him.
I know that there are many other parents who do exactly the same for their children.
(Plus its not just the DLA that's stopped, they also suspend the parents Carers Allowance)
So thank you rbbadger for posting the link.
And why not?

Their care is already being provided for them whilst in hospital. Does anyone know why it's 12 weeks for a child and only 4 for an adult?Sealed pot challenge #232. Gold stars from Sue-UU - :staradmin :staradmin £75.29 banked

It's a shame that people have no idea what it is like for families with disabled children. Nursing staff cannot cope with a child who has autism, for example. They don't have the training or the knowledge required. Someone has to be with them all the time and this often falls on the family to arrange. In practice, that means the parents. So they are in a more intense caring situation and yet have their money taken away.
Hospitals are not able to provide the level of care required for some of the more physically and learning disabled children. They don't have the staff or the time. It's the same for adults of course and the time allowed for children should also be extended to adults - the bills remain the same (if not more because of travelling costs, parking, food for the carer onsite, etc.).
It's obvious when you go into hospital - any hospital. The lack of care is astounding. Visit any ward and look for staff...they cannot cope with additional care needs and virtually demand parents and carers to assist with the care - while the carers are told "no money for you - you're not caring" by the government and by others who don't understand the realities of life as a carer. God forbid they ever have to find out the hard way, like so many of us do.0 -
i have two children with autism, ADHD, and learning difficulties, when one of them was in hospital i had to stay with him all the time as staff just could not cope with him, he was mforever trying to escape through the fire exit. i therefore had exra costs besides travelling parking expenses, i had to pay for a carer to look after my other son, luckily my son was only in for a couple of nightsloves to knit and crochet for others0

Many of us do. I was in hospital about 9-10 years ago and had to have a major medical procedure done.Sealed pot challenge #232. Gold stars from Sue-UU - :staradmin :staradmin £75.29 banked

I already spend in excess of 100 hours caring for my seriously ill husband and when he goes into hospital it gets a whole lot worse and all for £54 a week which is less than JSA by the way.
It would cost the state over £2000 a week to provide what a lot of disabled people need so why should the state not provide for us.
If carers were to withhold the care they provide this countries health care system as well as social services would fall to it's knees.
If my hubby was ever to spend more than four weeks in hosptial I would lose my CA and have to cliam JSA (oh but as i've already said JSA is worth more than CA) but because the hospitals can't/won't do everything my hubby requires I would not be available for work so would have to commit benefit fraud just to survive. Hardly fair is it?0 -
Not getting into the debate as to if DLA should be removed etc after a length of time in hospital but I do not see why there is a difference in adults to children as surely the expenses to retain a carer etc are the same as that carer still needs to be paid a retainer fee regardless of whether thats an adult or child. However many expenses such as food do get taken care of in the main. (Yes we all get the take aways and snacks to supplement hospital meals)
Personally I would say lets bring in the same rules for adult as child be that 4 weeks or 12 weeks or anywhere in between.0
