Is your heating ON or OFF?

  • Our thermostat is on 18 and we are just leaving it so heat comes on when it gets below and goes off when it reaches it, I am on prepay ( not through debt thankfully just got it many years ago when hubby earned daily and was hard to save up for bills and have got used to it now even though he is on weekly pay) and have to admit noticed by doing this am going through far less gas where as previously we used to change the thermostat up or down. Costing us about £6 a week for heating and gas hob so far although I put £10 in every week so if it gets even colder and heating comes on more we don't have to start thinking of putting more money in. Sometimes even though room temps show 18 its seems colder but we just put a fleece round us, as we know its not colder.

Finally cracked. It never got above twelve all day in the house - so yesterday evening it went on... set at fourteen. Bliss :)

Until I woke up at four in the morning absolutely cooking! Downstairs was at fourteen but heat rises, as you know :) and upstairs it was seventeen. And seventeen was too hot!

I cant believe some of you are managing to live with having no heating on. Mines on full and i'm still cold. I get up at least once with the dogs in the early hours of the morning when the heating is off and its like siberia in my house. Fair play to you though, i'd rather pay your heating bills than mine.

I went out yesterday and bought a thermal camisole and thermal leggings. I got dangerously near the bed last night in them and hubby said 'you aint getting into bed like that are you?'. I guess the sight of his boot socks put him off.:D

I havent turned the heating on yet... I am currently layering and I have two cats who like to snuggle so I have two furry hot water bottles :)

I have storage heaters as well and I dont particuarly like them so until it gets proper cold I am trying to not use them.

I can only assume that they have decent insulation in their houses. I'm the same as you - there are draughts galore so I'd hate to know what it's like without the heating on. There's a huge draught coming from behind the kitchen sink, but I can't close the door from the kitchen as it keeps popping open again. The kitchen was cheaply thrown in by the landlord so I don't think they bothered about blocking up holes. I'll be very depressed if I have to spend another winter in this house :(

All the double glazing has draughts too which I have to go round duct taping up.

    I wish :(

we are in a renovation project and near the beginning of it. Cracks in walls, leaky roof, single glazed sash windows, some windows that don't close properly. we had sme ineficient heating last year but it was a fortune to run and din't really heat the place very well amd we've had build delays and, er, cashflow problems. NEXT year we'l be warmer I hope.

we have NO insulation yet, because bats in the attic have prevented access, nd our roof space is bigger than the grant covered amount provides....we will do it.
  • Part of the reason I don't have heating on much is just because I find it makes the flat far too stuffy and I can't bear that - I would never have it on at night and have the radiator in the bedroom turned down. It's still mostly being used the moment to take the edge off cold air (so maybe have it on for about an hour) and when we're showering.

Got plenty of roof insulation and the windows are double glazed but it loses its heat pretty quickly. I want cavity wall insulation... even said i'd save up and pay for it myself but hubby is not keen.
