I cant believe some of you are managing to live with having no heating on. Mines on full and i'm still cold. I get up at least once with the dogs in the early hours of the morning when the heating is off and its like siberia in my house. Fair play to you though, i'd rather pay your heating bills than mine.

I went out yesterday and bought a thermal camisole and thermal leggings. I got dangerously near the bed last night in them and hubby said 'you aint getting into bed like that are you?'. I guess the sight of his boot socks put him off.:D

My house is well insulated, don't think I would be able to keep it off for this long if it wasn't,about ten years ago it was a different story it was freezing and my bills were a lot higher than they are now.Thank goodness for dg, cavity wall and loft insulation
  • Bella56 - is your sourdough starter OK? Mine lives in the fridge all the time except when I get it out to bake, and it's very bubbly!

My heating is off, and the room temp is 15, which is alright as I'm dressed in layers (vest, L/S t-shirt, thin wool jumper and really thick wool cardigan. Also have tweed trousers, thin tights underneath, and hanknitted woolly socks). Snug!

In the kitchen I am drying the washing on my Lakeland electric airer, which "leaks" a little heat in to the romm.

The CH goes on about 6pm, just as I sit down to eat (cooking keeps me warm up to that point), then goes off at about 9 or 9.30, so still some residual heat until I go to bed. I don't put it on in the morning unless I feel cold. Have had a few days where I needed it.

My recently replaced thermostat is set at 20 degrees, but seems to give the same amount of heat as the old one did when set at 16, so I don't believe it and dial up 20 for the result I want.

My recent gas bill showed my usage was down compared with same time last year, but electricity was slightly up - I blame this on the airer, which I only got in January.

Yeah it's OK, thanks. I'm starting the starter from scratch and now that it is warmer, it is lovely and bubbly! Will be making the first loaf using it tomorrow :j it is kamut spelt starter for kamut spelt bread, and I'm very excited :p

  • Good luck for tomorrow's baking Bella! Let us know how it goes!

I forgot to add - I usually use the laptop sitting at the dining table - but find using it AS a lap top keeps my lap lovely and warm!

The other day my DH went to a house where the lady was complaining she was cold, and it was the fault of the windows (he's a window service engineer). The heating was on full & it was VERY hot. But, although it was mid afternoon all she was wearing was a nighty & nothing on her feet. It was all laminate flooring. She complained that her feet were cold.....

Incidentally there was nothing wrong with the windows.

Unsurprisingly, and politely, he pointed out that heat rises - so that the floor is always likely to be cooler than the rest of the room, and that if she put some clothes on and something on her feet she would not be cold...

Heating well and truly on now. Not terribly high as I put on a fleece and have a flask with hot drink at hand all the time, but there's no way that I could do without heating at this stage - there is saving and there is jeopardising one's health. :o
Be careful who you open up to. Today it's ears, tomorrow it's mouth.

Heating on past 10 days. 18f (64) is my aim as just enough to feel comfortable and keep bills down !
  • Crikey! I wouldn't want to see your winter heating bill. Just turn the thermostat down to 5 degrees at night or when you're going out.

About the paperless billing: British Gas send you an email when they either need a meter-reading from you or have issued a bill. And a reminder if it's not been paid. This should be fine unless you determinedly never read your emails.

The heating bill is high, although I can't remember what it is. I didn't even turn it off in the summer and I feel stupid about it now. :o
I've managed to turn it off today, although that's probably too little too late, really wish I wasn't so stupid and turned it off when it was warmer!
Although I do have a reason to have the heating on a lot, because I'm self employed and my job isn't one that requires clothes. *ahem* :o
The heatings been off for about 3 hours now and the temp is 13, I'm not used to having the heating turned off so I feel really really really cold haha, I feel like I'm sat in a freezer! But I'm hoping if I sit here freezing my bits off for long enough, I'll get used to being cold and wont have to have the heating on as much.

I'm hoping I'll learn from this forum soon and be a money saving expert instead of a money wasting expert hahaha. :o

Winchelsea - I can recommend spelt kamut sourdough, although if I'm honest, the extra price of the flours makes it not worth it over normal flours. I only tried it as I've heard that both spelt and kamut are easier to digest.

As for heating, well we've had to turn ours off again! For that reason (and that reason only!) I can say that living in an insulated flat can be great! Our downstairs neighbours must have their heating blasting, in fact I can remember them saying that their monthly electrics bill is £200

Hope you are all warm and well. :santa2:
