Sorry for being a thicky, but do I take it you do not need a mac code for dial up,?

No way you're a thicky oap. I think you only need a MAC for BB. I certainly haven't got one for my dialup.

I enjoy your posts. Such a shame we have to moan but there is plenty to moan about!

So are you stillon Fast 4 Geoffo, I cannot sort it out, was there a difference between the dial up and broadband customers, did you all go to V21 Biscit or are you still with the original Fast 4 if there is one?
  • In case anyone is getting depressed about the impending disconnection of our ADSL service, this should cheer you up! http://www.fugufish.org/frog/?p=38 (and remind you why you want a BB connection again)!

Yes, there is a difference. The way I understand things is as follows.

Leaving aside any difficulties there might or might not be in cancelling payments, to stop using dial up you just stop dialling that particular phone number - there is no sense in which a service provider has any sort of claim on your phone number, therefore no question of any MAC being involved at all for dial up.

Many, perhaps all, customers of the old Fast4 customers had, or have, problems but they are not the same problems. It seems that all those customers should have been transferred to V21 (which is now called Biscit CSP). It seems that a mistake thingie caused some of those customers to be temporarily transferred to 'njpservices' before forwarding to V21.

However, the dial up customers were actually transferred to V21, albeit with loads of problems causing disrupted service. The BB customers became embroiled in a dispute between Fast4 (i.e. V21 since that company inherited the dispute which already existed) and 'netservices', the latter being the company that actually provided the BB service then sold to consumers by Fast4/V21/etc. As a result of that dispute 'netservices' did not, in effect, allow those customers to be transferred to V21. So effectively those customers have never really been V21 customers. Therefore, when those customers have their phone line freed by 'netservices' they have to choosee a provider whether V21 or someone else.

(Also, people involved with the old Fast4 company then setup a new company also called Fast4.)

Hope that helps. :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:

Nothing to do with being a thicky oap, it's always a good idea to ask questions.

No, MACs are only needed for broadband. With bb your phone line has to be registered with BTWholesale for the bb service you sign up to (the dreaded *tag* or *marker* :) ).
You are only allowed to sign up to, and use, one service (although it is technically possible to use more than one service). Because you have to pay a connection fee of 47 (some ISPs subsidise this), all decent companies will supply a MAC for a cheaper, quicker movement to another bb provider.
Although you pay the isp, it is really BTWholesale who are being paid for the connection.
You are the customer of the isp and the isp is the customer of BTWholesale, which is why BTWholesale aren't over keen to deal with end users :)

Dialup on the other hand requires no registering of the phone line to any company, so you can sign up to as many accounts as you like.

    Newnet update!

Really mainly for benefit of oap:

In the Newnet members login page it is possible to monitor a *usage graph* or daily/monthly tally of bandwidth actually used.

A week or so ago it went peculiar showing unrealistically high readings, affecting some people (not myself) but was put right very quickly.

It seems to have happened again this weekend, this time affecting many more (including myself). The tally for the past couple of days is several GB more than i have used.
The problem with this is that they have automated systems that send out emails to people warning them they may need to upgrade if they are exceeding their bandwidth.

I feel certain that Newnet will address this problem fairly quickly and no one should suffer as a result of this glitch. Some of the figures being produced are actually quite funny.
But it has got a few people a bit hot under the collar.

I mention it so that you can also ask this as a question when you speak to Newnet on Monday.

How these *mini crises* are handled is a measure of how good they are as an isp.

I'll keep you informed, i'm not too concerned myself, but i felt it was something you should be aware of,

    Regards

Well I hope not, as I will be on a measured bandwidth, lite user, which they will charge me for if I go over, yes I will ask them tomorrow, by the way tried to phone again today, held on for 12 minutes, 0845, my bt bill is growing every day, in NewNet website they say they had upped their staff and nobody has to wait more than ten minutes, I will bring that up as well, one of the reasons I wanted to go with them was because there was someone to speak to!!

Will let you know how I go on tomorrow, providing Netservices have not switched me off!! If as BT pages say I get cut off on 1st December, it may be quite a few days before I get back on again, so if there is silence that is why!!

Your help is very much appreciated, thanks again. oap
  • Hi oap, you had no chance of getting through on the phones this weekend with all the people phoning in about this meter problem. It will be the same today no doubt, but the sales lines will probably be fairly clear.
This is an unusual problem, which is why i mentioned it.

I am hoping to see a very clear statement from Newnet explaining the problem.
I would be very surprised if that didn't happen today

    i'll keep you informed
  • Newnet update for oap:

A brief statement has already been put on the status page:
    Bandwidth Stats
There has been an error with the adsl bandwidth calculations over the weekend. Software Engineers are working to resolve the problem as quickly as possible. Customers will not be charged for bandwidth they have not used and correct bandwidth stats will be restored as quickly as possible.

Also everyone's meter has been removed for the moment from the members area

So it looks like they're on the case :)
