dd has taken to uni like the proverbial duck to water! Thoroughly enjoying herself and found some great mates. Although she missed one the parties yesterday as she was not too well. (Fresher's flu thing). She's an only child (in fact the only child in the family!) so has always relied on yourself but after killing myself with worry for weeks beforehand I am really embarrassed with myself. She has been photographed for the local rag and has been helping one or two others to settle in. Its true what they say not knowing is always worse than reality or something like that.
Thought I would have a day out today - actually spending it waiting for an emergency plumber to call! Never a dull moment in our humble abode. HA HA0 -
Aw this thread is lovely, I'm not a parent but am actually a daughter who went away to uni 4 years ago... it seems kind of egotistical but I never actually thought about how weird it would be for my parents! thought it'd just be me that was the one who had to get used to living on my own.trying to become a moneysaving student0

I felt so proud of her as she trotted off with some others in the block to pick up her freshers band, she seems to be settling in fine, lots of texts and phone calls at the moment suppose that will inevitably tail off as she settles and i stop worrying (so much) though!
Hi, it's nice to hear from another 'Hull mum'..
I was so impressed with how organised things were on sat'day. I don't know what I was really expecting but I wasn't expecting all the help we got.
I managed to stay together over the weekend, me and hubby stayed over in Hull sat night incase we were needed at all, but it turned out that we did all the unpacking and went food shopping for DS while he socialised!! I was a bit miffed that we didn't even get a decent 'goodbye' cos he was too busy making new friends, but i've had lots of texts since so i'm happy that all's well with him.
Like I say, I held it together over the weekend, but i've been in pieces since. As predicted, I miss him so very much - and i can't wait to see him when he comes home at the weekend for his sunday job and some sleep. He says it's full on there, and some of the other freshers in his hall are very very noisey - he's not sleeping very well...
I'm gald that your DD (and everyone elses DDs and DSs) are doing ok. what hall is your DD in in Hull?0 -
We're off to Portsmouth to visit our son on Saturday. I have to take his sleeping bag, his nail clippers, his new bank card and he's bought a bicycle, so we're buying him a lock and some reflective gear.
He's not missing us at all. It's a bit quiet in our house but so far so good."If you think it's expensive to hire a professional to do the job, wait until you hire an amateur." -- Red Adair0 -
Well, I have been speaking to my daughter tonight and she wants me to move house and live near her....so that I can do all her 'housework' lol
I have sent her a link to a You Tube video on how to get her duvet inside the cover....she says she can't do it and the duvet is all messed up inside!
My fault I guess for not insisting she makes her own bed when at home...but now she is just too lazy to do it. I have offered to teach her, but she says she can't be bothered to learn. Homesick blues maybe.0 -

Hi
I also dropped my son off at Hull on Saturday, we have had some serious wobbles since then and he is coming home for the weekend tomorrow.
Think it is more to do with it being threshers week, he says its really noisy and he's not the type to go out drinking etc. Although I did not want him to come home this early, I now think it is the best thing for him. He will then be able to go back Monday and start his course properly.
It's horrible sitting on the end of a phone when he is upset on the other end. I know he is not the only one and they just need to give it changce.
Though must admit cant wait to give him a hug tomorrow.:)0 -
We dropped our daughter off to uni, 312 miles away to Cornwall. She asked us to leave whilst she got her room organised and then went out with the others on her corridor in the evening. I was a little disappointed as thought she might have wanted to go out for an evening meal! The next day we left after taking her shopping and filling her car with petrol as she was anxious to go and register at the health centre with one of the girls. We drove home and I wasn`t upset. My other daughter went to uni 3 years ago and it took me months to stop crying. I couldn`t even walk by her bedroom without filling up so had to close the door.
I have booked to go to Cornwall for a few days at half term to see how she is doing. My other daughter came home every week as she didn`t settle and was quite homesick. She was only about hour and a half away and took until her final year to actually like uni life.0 -

My heart goes out to you and your son, and hope a weekend of love and reassurance helps him to settle. There seems a lot of pressure on them during freshers week to "let their hair down" and like your son my DD isnt really a great party goer, but luckily shes got the attitude that shes there, its a once in a lifetime experience and its the best way to mix and meet lots of people from whom she will be able to make those "best friends relationships".
Please tell your son that hes not the only one, we really thought at one stage on Sat that we were gonna have to pack the car back up and bring her home!

My daughter hated freshers week last year, the noise was terrible and she couldn't sleep. Her other flat mates went out but she stayed in, came home at weekendsbut she wasn't that far away.
She did go to the freshers ball with her boyfriend but didn't sdtay too late.
It does pass and then they have to get on with their course and loads of work.
This year she is travelling in by bus. she gets up at six, catches 2 buses and gets home at 6pm.
It's a long day!2013
