I think you will find this is not correct.
Like I said, I have actually dealt with this very issue before, and have spent time communicating with the Information Commissioner's Office about it. I think you will find that I am correct.

If it helps write it down (price on the SEL/price on the package etc) then if you don't want to do it there and then (but i would advise you do as the SEL might of been removed when you return if someone else gets the same item) you can check them in your car against the reciept.

Short of PM'ing Nesima for help!!, you could keep an eye on the other thread.

There's plenty of answers to your questions in earlier posts - but the item has to scan at the HIGHER price for R&R, and say nothing at the checkout!!

Most people will tell you to read the thread, as all the information is contained within. However, I will try to give you a quick rundown.

1: Obvious one, this - on items such as meat, etc, where the item is priced according to weight and the price per kilogram is given, check the SEL and the item in question to see if the price per kilogram is the same. If the item has a higher price per kg than the SEL, you will be overcharged, as you will be charged the price on the pack. However, the price on the pack has been calculated based on the higher price per kg, as shown on the item itself, rather than by using the lower price per kg, as shown on the SEL.

    2. Out of date offers. When you see offers, check the expiry date on the bottom. If it's out of date, there's a good chance you will be charged a higher price, as the offer is over. However, Tesco sometimes extend the offers and stores don't bother changing the POS to reflect this. This means that the offer can still be valid. A scanner is a good thing in cases like this, as you can check before going to the till. However, if you get spotted using the scanner, some stores will hold it against you.

    3. Stickers. Some items have prices on them by way of stickers, yet the SEL shows a higher price. Normally, the SEL is right and you get charged the higher amount. This is an overcharge, as the store is legally bound to charge you the lowest price indicated (i.e. the price on the sticker). Scanners are good for checking these, too, as sometimes the sticker and SEL is wrong and the item scans at an even lower price!! This normally happens with CDs, Console Games, DVDs, etc.

4: Offers which simply don't work. These are hard to test. Either you take a chance and pay hoping the offer doesn't work, or you read about it on here first. The other way of spotting offers that don't work is the lack of yellow SEL on the product. Normally, no yellow SEL means it's not been included in the offer. This is how the Console problem was discovered. Certain PSPs did not have a yellow SEL, which meant the discount was not going to be taken off when you bought one with the GOTW (Game of The Week). The POS (point of sale material) said that you got a £10 discount if you bought a PSP and the GOTW. The information on the POS was not specific enough to exclude the PSPs that were not in the offer, thus anyone buying the non-offer PSPs was overcharged. Same applied to the Xbox 360s....wrong game put up as GOTW (could tell, as the game did not have a yellow SEL, even though it was advertised as the GOTW on the poster).

Umm...think that's covered everything. If all else fails and you purchase something you didn't really want and were not overcharged, just ask for a refund saying that you've changed your mind, or claim that you've left your credit card at home.

  • I am also new to this forum and have been reading through for the last hour.
What I would say is that I appreciate that for some of the regullar posters making the best of the Tesco R&R Policy is clearly a hobby or even making money i.e. selling on the goods (multiple same items) they recieive or don't want themsselves (electtrical goods).

But I would have to say I believe what the Nesima poster says is basically true. I don't think it is right that people go to Tescos just to make money from their R&R.

I think everyone has covered the answers pretty well.

Just remember there anre no guarantees in life. Just because someone psots a misprice on here doesn't mean it will be mispriced everywhere.

Errors are corrected reasonably:confused: quickly so you need to act soon after posts on here.

Sometimes mistakes linger or reappear so keep your eyes open.

Sometimes you just have to bite the bullet and go for it. If the discount does come off, either say you don't want it, buy it and head for CS or pay for the steak instead!

People R&R for different reasons. Some people do it purely for financial gain. Others do it as a hobby. I'd say a lot of people who post on this thread actually do it because they are fed up with the underhand tactics used by Tesco, as well as Tesco's inability to simply charge customers the correct price at the till. I, for one, would be happy if Tesco never overcharged me. However, that's simply not the case. Tesco does overcharge me, then CS assistants try hard to get out of following company policy in regards to overcharges.

Personally, I haven't actually done loads of biggy R&Rs. I don't normally go out to Tesco purposely looking for pricing errors. If I am in a store, I am normally there to shop. If I spot an error and I actually will use the item, I will probably buy it. If I am not likely to use it, I tend to leave it. I have actually been known to point out errors to staff in a store if they are nice and polite, without me buying one! There's one store near me where I always point out pricing errors for this very reason - the staff and management are really very nice and know the meaning of CS. The only time I've ever been overcharged in there (accidentally), the CSA was lovely and gave me a full refund without me even asking for it. He even had a big smile on his face when he told me I was entitled to a full refund due to the overcharge. A little customer service goes a long way, eh?

Yet another one! Tesco makes money from all its customers! Tesco profits would probably be lower if they charged every one of their customers the correct price. If the posters on this forum went to T.S. with all the overcharges we have found, (a lot of them by checking our receipts) Tesco would be inundated with fines. Someone said on here £1000 per item I think. THAT would put the prices up!
