Sort of on topic with the self-scan news.

The future is this, because I know it to be true:

Get trolley - fill it with shopping.

Push trolley through a scanning portal.

This scans the entire contents of the trolley without any item being unloaded.

    Pay your bill.

Then of course, off to the CS employee to claim any R&Rs

Ah, the old rfid....scarey news for all retail staff.....

if you are unsure have a look at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RFID

So am I understanding right? If I put something through the self service till, and I am overcharged for it, that it somehow deemed my own fault in some way and no R&R is given?

I hate them anyway, they are fine if they have nobody using them, and you only have a couple of unambiguous items. But if there is a hint of a queue, you can be certain it will be faster to get in any other queue of any length. The never work right, they constantly tell you to wait for assistance, or something is there that shouldn't be, or isn't there that should be etc. I hate them! And I'm no technophobe. I expectedc to love them!]

Slightly OT, bit on the same subject. was queuing at one with dh the other day (despite my protests!) and a woman was at the scanner, mobile phone to her ear, getting the assistant they have there for all 6 tills to scan and pack her trolly full of shopping while she gabbed on the phone! Cheeky !!!!!!

To my knowledge. Tesco self scanning tills do not have the ability to scan the writting 3.73 on the front of a book.

I have to say, if you feel that strongly then dont use them, the choice is yours, some people like them, you obviously do not.

    Freedom of choice.

Couple RFID with electonic shelf edge labelling, and you're laughing. You'd have a decrease in overcharging and also shoplifting. If SELs are centrally controlled, then it would be down to HO if things are messed up on the shelves. ;)

  • Yet surprisingly, since the self service tills were intoduced in my store no-one has been sacked because of them.

    Obviously.

They've barely been around for 2yrs..

You have to get the public used to an idea before it can replace what came before. The majority of people don't go anywhere near the self-scan machines, other than to have a look out of curiosity.

When the public accept the idea THEN the jobcuts will come in, obviously.

Just thought you'd all like to know, today Kevin Kelly phoned me to say my nationwide ban has been overturned, and we have our Clubcard points back. Very pleased with this outcome.

Very pleased for you, taxiphil and am sure that the decent Tesco employees who post here would not demur. Spa2k and constantine always seem balanced and sensible in their posts.
Hope the honeymoon plans are reinstated - kindest regards.

Yep, I read about that a while back. Quite unbelieveable, eh? Should we start talking in newspeak?

I can promise you, I have scanned many things that have been reduced, and the reduced price does not come off.

    Hello kondormid-
Somewhere on one of these discussion threads, some time back, I am certain I read about the importance of placing a reduced label COMPLETELY[/B[Bover the old/incorrect one being INSTILLED during Tesco staff training. Apparently, if any portion of the previous label is visible, this is what the till reads.
    Apologies if I am misquoting.

No, that not what I meant, what I meant was that if you were to miss-scan a reduced barcode, or say put your banannas through as cherries or something then you wouldn't be entitled to R&R. But of course if you were to use a self-service till and the item scans at more than it should then its R&R
    Titch :)
