  • The thing is, self-service tills aren't designed to cut back on overcharges, what they are there for is to reduce .... the number of staff needed.

Indeed. They are there to put people out of jobs and make yet more profit for management and shareholders..

Just wondered if anyone had an previous experience of this to get anywhere with Tesco Customer Service ...
I've successfully received a cheque from CS for a psp that I took a refund for instore. I casually mentioned TS and ASA in my email and how abysmally rude the young staff member was to me, and they issued a cheque almost immediatley. This was the last weekend in August just before all the console saga kicked off.

Regarding the lack of chip and pin, I think in my local store that that till is SAFER than checkout.

Once, I was going through the till (before chip and pin) and the checkout lady took my card and placed it in her lap. I was watching this out of the corner of my eye. When she gave me the receipt, I asked for my card. She said 'I gave it back to you'. I said 'you didn't'. She said 'I definately did'. It was only when I loudly said 'I saw you hide my card in your lap under the till, now give me back my card' that she handed it over pretty quickly. The manager did not want to know AT ALL.

A few months later my ex had her card cloned. It was by a member of staff at Tesco. When we discussed it with a manager at Tesco (same store as above) they said they were aware, but yet didn't seem to care AT ALL. Didn't even apologise - she had 2k taken out of her current account.

Sort of on topic with the self-scan news.

The future is this, because I know it to be true:

Get trolley - fill it with shopping.

Push trolley through a scanning portal.

This scans the entire contents of the trolley without any item being unloaded.

    Pay your bill.

Then of course, off to the CS employee to claim any R&Rs

Do checkout operators make mistakes? Yes absolutely, think double scans, missed reduction labels etc. All tesco staff are trained, some admittedly may not seem that way but no one is just plonked onto a checkout and told to get on with it!!

Thats the plus of the self service tills, they prevent double scans as you can't scan an item til the previous item has been placed in the bagging area
Indeed. They are there to put people out of jobs and make yet more profit for management and shareholders..

Yet surprisingly, since the self service tills were intoduced in my store no-one has been sacked because of them.

You don't even need the "portal". RFID tags on the shopping will charge your card automatically as soon as you leave the store :)
    Can I help?

Machines can only make mistakes if mistaken data is put into them. If the reduction label is scanned then that is the price that will be charged.

To my knowledge. Tesco self scanning tills do not have the ability to scan the writting 3.73 on the front of a book.
The thing is, self-service tills aren't designed to cut back on overcharges, what they are there for is to reduce queues and reduce the number of staff needed.

And looking at the points you made, they can do quantities, but only when in staff mode, but normal customers just have to do things one at a time. And provided customers scan properly they shouldn't be overpriced on reduced stuff. And with regards to spotting misprices, the only ones that can be stopped by staff on checkouts is stickered products which can be set to require authorisation if needs be on self service tills.

Can you explain how the multiple items thing works because my local tesco do not know how to do it. I would gladly show them. But arnt these things supposed to be opperated by a memeber of the public then? Waste of time if it needs a memeber of staff (who I do call and can not do multiples either)

I can promise you, I have scanned many things that have been reduced, and the reduced price does not come off. You seem to be under the impression that everything in a Tesco store that is reduced has a special sticker on it. This is so not true, they usually have yellow sels and something like reduced previous price from 01/9/06 to 30/9/06 on them. Sometimes they even have a big sticker with the price on it but no barcode.

OK, challenge for everyone who goes into a Tesco and goes through a Self Service till. Buy 3 oranges for 19p or however much they are and see for yourself. Surely I can not be the only one to suffer this problem. Also if you buy something reduced an it doesn't come off let us know because it can't just be the till i am using can it?

This might seem a minor problem but it causes one hell of a hold up when you have to type in a code and roll each orange seperatly down the conveyer (i eat lots of oranges and sometimes buy 20), try to be clever and not do the roll down the conveyer bit and it moans at you because it claims you have not done it. The things a moron!
They are not there to prevent overcharging or misprices.

Do checkout operators make mistakes? Yes absolutely, think double scans, missed reduction labels etc. All tesco staff are trained, some admittedly may not seem that way but no one is just plonked onto a checkout and told to get on with it!!

Good point, staff do make mistakes, but surely when you throw that responsibility to an untrained person the mistake ratio increases.

Anyway feel free to answer and by all means have the last say, but to be honest I think they are rubbish bits of kit and the person who bought them is an idiot.
  • I know people are knocking Tesco for the self-scan machines, but it isn't just a Tesco issue. You have exactly the same problem with pay at the pump petrol stations. All the giant supermarket chains have pay at the pump pumps on their forecourt, with no added security. It would be easy to use someone else's credit card, as it never asks for a pin number.

What he means in the yellow barcode reduction stickers, the price stickers they can't change, not can a normal checkout operator.

In simple terms they need to go into assist mode and then into key enter item and they can do quantities from there. But it is specifically for customers with large amounts of items, not just 3 or 4 of one thing.

If thats the case then it means that its on offer and not a reduced item, and if the self scan tills are scanning wrong then so will the normal tills.
Good point, staff do make mistakes, but surely when you throw that responsibility to an untrained person the mistake ratio increases.

The main mistakes from cashiers are double scans and input errors (such as putting produce through as the wrong thing or missing a reduced sticker and scanning the full barcode). And double scans are prevented by sef-serve as I has mentioned earlier and input errors would be the fault of the customer, and therefore would make them a normal refund and not R&Rs.

i would like to add, i have just read the last 4 or 5 pages and theres not alot of R&R talk all of a sudden.

i like to read intensley these pages and am still looking for my 1st R&R...can we all try and stay on topic?
