How would you reply to this seller?

Hi guys,

I won an item (170032511137) this afternoon and promptly paid by paypal. I got this email about 2 hours after....

Sorry to do this but I have had 3 auctions ending today that the reserve has not been hit...this being one of them.

I have e-mailed e-bay to find out what went wrong but they are extremely slow with answers to questions.

My reserve on this item was £20.00...If you don't wish to pay this I will give a refund on what you have paid already no problem.

Really sorry but the screen is worth more than a tenner as you probably are aware.

I will understand if you wish to leave negative feedback but this is not my fault.

You are the third person I have had to do this to today...my feedback is excellent and I don't enjoy this one bit.

Now, the guy has been a member since May 04, has 349 feedback at 100% - he must know what he is doing and that you can't reserve for less than £50.

Would you reply or go straight to ebay/paypal?

Thanks

Id give the guy a break.

We all have times where we list things then they unexpectedly sell wayy to cheap. Its not going to sell it for 20 quid so why punish him with negative feedback.

If i were you Id ask for a refund and agree to both leave positive feedback so at least your improving your ratings over this.
  • It would put my back right up that he's lying about the reserve.

Strictly speaking this is fee avoidance... and if he has that much feedback he probably does make a habit of doing this. The crawling email is obviously his way of trying to avoid a neg and a strike.

Why should he continue to get away with this?
    My TV is broken!
Edit: refunded £515 for TV 1.5 years out of warranty - thank you Sale of Goods Act! :j

Depends on the mood you are in at the time. The thing that would annoy me is the fact that his email is all tosh. Why couldn't he have been straight in his email instead of talking nonsense about reserves etc.

Do you feel charitable? At the end of the day if he doesn't want to sell it you can't force him.

I'm sorry, I have bought and paid for an item. The guy started this listing at £5, if he wasn't prepared to accept this amount then he should have started it higher. We all know you can't reserve for less than £50, so he is lying. I won the auction, i expect to recieve the item. I know that if he refunds me, he is gonna relist at a higher amount.

So do you think it is right that if an item does not reach what you expect you can refund and re-list the item?
  • I'd email him and say he couldn't have had a reserve of £20 because (I think) £50 is the lowest you can do a reserve.

I've sold lots of things at heartbreaking prices but that's the name of the game.

Thanks Fay, thats exactly how I feel. I know the item will be re-listed tomorrow but at a higher price!

Should I email back, letting him know that I know how email operates and the he is lying in his email? Or should I contact ebay/paypal?

Forward him the link to the Ebay rules on reserve prices and ask him how he sets a £20 reserve.
What is the item really worth?
    Happy chappy
  • Possibly he intended to list it with a BIN of £20.

By the way he has a minor bid retraction habit.

Its a screen for a motorbike, I haven't a clue how much it is worth, hubby asked me to bid as he is at work.
