I guess one will have to see if the 3.99 credit can be used up with calls to mobiles and 0845/0780 calls?

I refer to sergeant121's excellent summary
    Now you've made me blush!

Anyway, I think you have misunderstood OneTel's procedure. The LeisureUKTalk package normally costs £3.99 per month. New customers signing up for it this month are charged £3.99 and then OneTel make a corresponding credit of £3.99 to their account - so the package become 'free' in effect.

It's not a question of how you use the £3.99 credit - it's used for you!

    From Martin's article:

"How to use your call credits

Both the 'free' £20 and 'free' £3.99 a month from One-Tel are in the form of call credits rather than just discounts. So if you use One.Tel only for the free calls and then call18866 for others, you'll never feel this call credit benefit.

There's an easy work around though . While One.Tel isn't competitive for calling mobiles, the difference between it and 18866 is smaller here. So each month just use One.Tel to call mobiles to use up your call credit (either by a rough estimate or to be really accurate use its online bill checker)."

So I assumed I would get billed £3.99 a month whatever I do.

Rather than have the £3.99 call credits accruing I may as well spend them on something?

Martin suggested mobile calls - I think 0845/0780 calls should be done as well - though it depends on how much one currently spends on these types of calls...
  • My recommendation would be to phone TalkTalk and threaten to leave them unless they change you onto the TalkTalk1+ tariff which would give you free UK calls evening and w/ends for one year. If TalkTalk won't change your tariff you could then actually move to Onetel, however, when TalkTalk brought out this free year of calls many existing customers were changed over to the new tariff and I would think if you threaten them with leaving they will be happy to keep you. This would then save you working out how many hours you have used in a month and also it does you for national as well as local calls! Four hours a month to me doesn't sound like much with a teenager in the house, that would be used up in one night, lol.

You would still use 18866 for 1p calls through the day.

You are such a star! I called Talk Talk and asked to be changed to the TalkTalk1+ tariff, and they said it was only available to new customers. I said "Oh don't worry, OneTel are doing something similar" and I was immediately put through to a supervisor and changed to TalkTalk1+ free of charge for a year.

    Thank you!

    No.

Unlike the £20 credit, there is no £3.99 call credit. Each month, OneTel will put a £3.99 charge for the LeisureUKTalk package on your account and also a £3.99 credit - to make the package free.

Really pleased to hear it :)

There are lots of "stars" on MSE, Andy88 has been a star for me this week helping me to get online while I am staying with friends, thanks Andy! ;)

I have joined Ontel and will be moving to them from my current supplier which is owned by Ontel on 1st March.

I am on the LesuireTalk plan but see no mention of the £20 credit I gather that's calls but it mentions nothing in the letter I got other than get a friend or family to join and you get £20.

I don't really want to ring them again it isn't a pleasant experience speaking to there call centre.

No longer a user, goodbye folks. PLEASE delete my account. Thank you

Well, you certainly should if you are a new OneTel customer and signed up online.

The relevant page on their website makes that clear.

  • Hi there-
I currently use 1899, and I'm all ready to sign up for One.Tel to get the free credit, as well as 12.50 from Rpoints, however...

Will my BT internet dial-up unlimited be messed up now that all calls will go via One.Tel?

(I know that there are probably slightly cheaper dial-up things out there, but I'd rather not switch at the moment, especially since I don't want to change my email address all over again.)

My BT internet is a flat rate charge per month, based on dialling to a certain number. If it goes thru One.Tel, will One.Tel charge me for that call? That's my only worry.

    Thanks!

It depends what the dial-up number is.

My (flat rate of £13.99 per month) dial-up has always been with OneTel and uses an 0808 (freephone) number but, when I was with Tele2 CPS, that was no problem - a freephone call is free (except on some mobiles).
