[B]1 Student and 1 Income Support Claim[/B]

i have moved into a flat and share with a student. I am currently on income support and my flat mate is a full time student. I understand that I still have to pay water and sewage charges however, should we both be excused for council tax?
We have been told that because I claim income support, that means my flat mate cannot be excused as a student so we will have to pay 75% of the council tax.
Is this really true? please help, any information will be grateful

Not sure but a student is exempt from council tax. And as you are the only other adult in the house you only have to pay 75% (as 25% single person discount). Not sure if your income support means you shouldn't have to pay.
The student shouldn't be exempt from water rates though.0 -

the student is exempt from council tax and water charges and income support is excused from just council tax, however they are saying that because we live in the same flat then the student isn't exempt[STRIKE]Beggars cant be choosers, but savers can![/STRIKE]That used to be the case :mad:0 -

Someone on IS isn't excused from paying council tax, they have to apply for council tax benefit.
Are you in a relationship together?0 -

Are you asking for help, or just trying to contradict people? Oldernotwiser is correct, you are not exempt, you need to apply for CTB.Gone ... or have I?0 -

Has the student given the council the certificate they get from uni stating they're a full-time student, and therefore, exempt from paying council tax?Sealed pot challenge #232. Gold stars from Sue-UU - :staradmin :staradmin £75.29 banked

im correcting them because i know i am exempt CT and a student is exempt from CT, the question is can we both be excused if we live together.
i have claimed CTB thats why i have been given this decision. theres no need to start getting offensive on here[STRIKE]Beggars cant be choosers, but savers can![/STRIKE]That used to be the case :mad:0 -

It is you that is wrong. An exemption is completely different from being in receipt of CTB. Are you in receipt of a CTB award?Gone ... or have I?0 -
Keet83 you are not exempt from paying council tax you stil have to pay however you get council tax benefit to pay for the council tax when on income support
a student is exempt and this is why the council tax is reduced to 75% the standard rate for a single person
