hi...sorry for the delay...now back on a wired connection as the wireless isn't working again.....is this normal???
    No, it isn't normal.

Try using a different channel number on the router's wireless settings page.
Make sure your router is using the latest firmware version. Router Status page shows the firmware version. See http://kbserver.netgear.com/products/DG834G.asp for latest firmware for your version of the DG834G.

If you need to update the firmware, do it using Internet Explorer and a wired connection.

Now it's wireless again, although it took ages to connect and the wireless network connection window say I'm not connected....but I am. Also says it's unsecured. Now I really am confused!!!!

don't worry about security until you've got a reliable connection
