My daughter is profoundly disabled thus a wheelchair user ,and the reason she gets in free to attractions is because she cannot use any rides etc etc .
Some disabilities would not stop you accessing the rides ,so why should those disabled persons not pay to have fun. Just my opinion

I sincerely hope this never happens but what will you do if your son comes back from afghanistan disabled and then gets told the same thing? You sure as hell wouldn't be saying what you are now and you would be telling them that he deserves the concession for fighting for his country. Just because the OP is not in a wheelchair doesn't mean that they are not disabled. I class myself as disabled, I am not in a wheelchair and if a company told me what OP has been told I would play merry hell with them.
Really? Why would you play merry hell with a company who are generous enough to give a discount to wheelchair users?

Because the wording is wrong? They say "disabled concession" rather than wheelchair??

    Give over.

If anyone wants to go to this place for the day out, then pay the price asked and stop blooming quibbling about wrong wording or whether or not people in wheelchairs are more or less disabled than others.

We all know what disabled means. This company obviously give a discount becasue they think someone in a wheelchair cannot access all the facilities.........and its that simple.

(or is it if you actually believe the OP, who incidently has not come back, has not yet named the company and has been the starter of many 'untruths')
  • Yes sunnyone put it on the board where it says that.Who are you then ? My good it has to be hard work remembering all thoseusernames and trolling of the boards.Y our ace at it .Sad sad

Is it possible to keep this nice? Just once, please.

Re the OP's question, my son is not in a wheelchair, I am not in a wheelchair but youngest is classed as disabled. He cannot, because of his disability, enjoy the full realm of activities on offer at say a theme park, not because he cannot physically get on the rides due to lack of mobility (although he does have some lack of mobility) but because it is a strange place, the crowd waiting is too big, it's too scary, he has gone into meltdown, is having an asthma attack.

I cannot go on the full range of rides (although I am not in receipt of DLA but have sticks/crutch..god knows if that makes me disabled though), because only gentle rides are able to be boarded due to back problems, if there are a lot of steps, I can't do those.

We go as a family (no choice, middle son is not old enough to go on his own, or safe enough!), the other two are able to go on the rides as normal (even if eldest shouldn't!), so the usual thing is for me and youngest to be sat on the sidelines waiting for the other two and not enjoying the full scope of rides....due to disabilities.

Mind you, we go so rarely to these things, that it is not really a problem for us whether a company offers a discount or not...it's still too blooming expensive!
We made it! All three boys have graduated, it's been hard work but it shows there is a possibility of a chance of normal (ish) life after a diagnosis (or two) of ASD. It's not been the easiest route but I am so glad I ignored everything and everyone and did my own therapies with them.
Eldests' EDS diagnosis 4.5.10, mine 13.1.11 eekk - now having fun and games as a wheelchair user.

Sorry maybe I wasn't clear enough. If someone told me that I didn't sound disabled and because I wasn't in a wheelchair that I wasn't disabled I would play merry hell with them. Personally I am not bothered if I get concessions for my disability or not, i never ask for them and have only received them twice, once at alton towers and once at the cinema.

I would be more annoyed at being judged by whoever because I do not use a wheelchair.

When being interviewed by an employers occupational therapist or whatever they call them a few years back, he had the gaunt to tell me that I was lying about my illnesses and disability because I was too young to have what I have. At that point I ended the interview and made a formal complaint. I didn't let that drop until I had a written apology from the company in question.

I understand why the OP or anyone in OP's position when you are judged because you don't look the part would feel rather annoyed and a lot of people would let it go for fear of upsetting people, sometimes something does have to be said.
  • Interesting reading here!
We are taking my little granddaughter to Blackpool in a week or two to celebrate her 2nd birthday (see the lights etc.) and we had hoped to take her to Beaver Creek at the Pleasure beach. However her daddy cannot access some rides due to a medical problem (he won't say disability), he has undergone major spinal surgery so many of the rides are a no no, Granddad is registered disabled, high rate mobility, blue badge (in fact all boxes mentioned above ticked except the wheelchair one) and would find it impossible to use any of the rides. I am not disabled but do have back problems and may be eligible for the 'wide' concession proposed earlier ;). When I looked at how much it would cost for us to buy ride tickets for the pleasure beach it was an horrendous amount of money for a family that wouldn't be able to use the rides. The only other option was a much lower priced ticket that allowed you to use the railway and a boat ride (I think) so we couldn't use the Beaver Creek rides. I emailed Blackpool Pleasure Beach asking if there were any other ticket prices and have been completely ignored so now we're planning a day trip without going to the Pleasure Beach - ok for now as at 2 she won't miss it but it'll take some explaining in the years to come!
I just wish the companies that offer concessions tried to understand that disability doesn't just mean wheelchair users - my son looks just like you and me, except there's a rather large scar on his back!

They do not have to offer a concession at all as it is not compulsory.....and I do believe, that over time, the companies who do offer a consession to wheelchair users will stop giving it full stop.
No doubt they have lots of letters and phone calls to deal with from people asking why no consession for 'disabled'?

The extra work involved for someone to reply to all those letters will, eventually, force them into stopping the generous concession that they do give.

There would be 1000's of people claiming all kinds of disability just so they can get a free place.
Even if it was restricted to BB holders only, there are so many of those it would cost the company so much money in lost revenue.

Just because someone doesnt go on the rides doesnt mean that they cannot enjoy the day out.
My sister doesnt go on rides but she would enjoy her day out none the less because she is with her family watching them have fun, taking in the scenery, enjoying background music, browsing the stalls and shops etc and maybe taking a treat or two in a restaurant/cafe.

Rides do not make the day, the company you keep does. So to keep it simple and effective the concession is given to wheelchair users mainly. Yes, they can still do the things listed above much of the time however it is a gesture that has to have a line drawn somewhere.

I do think, though, that the gesture will be removed because of all the complaints eventually.
