It was made wheelchair only after one day we watched a group of guys coming down the entrance all messing around, pushing each other, running and jumping over the fence. Only then to stand and witness two of them all of a sudden starting to limp really badly and get help coming up the steps, present us with a dla letter and ask for a discount. I personally told them to !!!! off and not come back. So its people like this thats forcing businesses to rethink offering discounts

But anyone can hire a wheelchair or borrow a friends' and claim they can't walk.

Well, that certainly isn't fair, considering the statistical rate of DLA fraud is comparatively tiny (whatever George Osborne says, DLA is not an "out-of-work benefit". I swear that man doesn't bother to look up accurate documentation on the system he's supposedly running, sometimes...).

I can't run or jump, and I would need assistance to get up steps. My hips try to dislocate if I lift my feet too far off the ground. I'm not in a wheelchair. It doesn't make me not disabled.

The thing is, I don't claim I can't walk. Because I can. We even joke about me being Andy Pipkin (from Little Britain) when I'm getting up out of my wheels.

What I can't do is walk for any length of time without being in pain, both at the time and for days afterwards.

I mean, people get that toddlers use pushchairs for that precise reason, but not that an adult can be in the same position?

And yes, I take all the discounts I'm entitled to. I'm doing an OU course so I am entitled to an NUS card. Sometimes I have to work out what's better (ie cheaper) - the student discount, the flyer they've handed out in the street or the disabled discount. Hey, if they gave discounts for people with brown hair or size 6.5 feet :rotfl:, I'd take them too.

  • Lol still playing the 'my dissability's worse than yours!' game here I see.

I don't look dissabled in the slightest although I easily could. I could have a cane and a big black visor thingy and then I would 'look blind' but I try bloody hard not to look blind and to lead as normal a life as possible but just because I wear cat 4 desert sunglasses instead of a crappy visor and I hold my partners elbow or hand instead of a cane doesn't make my sight any better than a person who looks blind.

The main point of concessions anyway is that your carer gets in free because you couldn't be there without them. I often pay full price and Matt pays nothing. I don't know why we get across the Severn bridge for free too but I'll take it lol.

Many people of varying disabilities need a carer and could go to places by themselves at all.
I can enjoy all of the rides in a theme park but I cling to Matt the whole time we're there and he makes sure I have a safe place to stay and wait if he has to go to the toilet. If we go to the cinema he is continualy whispering in my ear the things he knows I won't have seen properly even though the room is dark and we sit at the front.

No concession's aren't compulsary but to start saying that only some disabled people deserve them is unacceptable as no staff member on the gate of any type of attraction would in any way qualified to judge.

  • My daughter is profoundly disabled thus a wheelchair user ,and the reason she gets in free to attractions is because she cannot use any rides etc etc .
Some disabilities would not stop you accessing the rides ,so why should those disabled persons not pay to have fun. Just my opinion

I can't use rides either. I dislocate. So how would you form definite criteria about whether people pay extra - about who could and who could not access certain facilities? Being in a wheelchair doesn't define that.

But getting around is a problem. Your daughter (if she's under say, 16) would need someone with her anyway - regardless of whether she's disabled or not.

Why would you go to an attraction if your daughter can't use any of the rides?

Last word on this from me ..it is hardly a big deal at the end of the day and if the OP wants to take it further then get on and do it..me i have other things to worry about like my son in Afghanistan...so get on with it.though i suspect that nothing will be resolved at the end of the day..Life is to short at the end of the day to be arguing over such trivia in my opinion.
We all have the right to our own opinions.

I sincerely hope this never happens but what will you do if your son comes back from afghanistan disabled and then gets told the same thing? You sure as hell wouldn't be saying what you are now and you would be telling them that he deserves the concession for fighting for his country. Just because the OP is not in a wheelchair doesn't mean that they are not disabled. I class myself as disabled, I am not in a wheelchair and if a company told me what OP has been told I would play merry hell with them.
