I must have been on another planet as I didn't realise you could get concessions for being disabled.. If that's the case would it not apply to everyone that holds a DLA award, because there would certainly be a lot of concessions and not a lot of profit made I think. I also thought you weren't allowed to discriminate any disability under the DDA, whether you are in a wheelchair or not. I suppose it's kind of like when a disabled person, who doesn't look disabled, parks in a disabled place and gets moaned at by some OAP because they have jumped the gun and made 5..
Saying that I have never used my DLA for concessions because I don't really class myself as disabled, and yes I suppose I always thought you had to be in a wheelchair to be disabled, or look disabled, until I actually got my own disability award. But I don't look it as mine is a mental health issue..so I would probably get challenged over it anyway.Mortgage Free as of 20.9.17Declutter challenge 2023, 2024 🏅 🏅⭐️⭐️

its a silly rule because anyone could buy a wheelchair just to get concession , surely a letter from dla or such is more proof than a wheelchair that could be picked up on a bootsale for £20.... things never siese to amaze me .0

The dla letter doesn't have a photo of the disabled person on it. So I could lend someone my dla letter and they could get the concession.Sealed pot challenge #232. Gold stars from Sue-UU - :staradmin :staradmin £75.29 banked

I've never used a DLA concession, I get a bit embarassed asking about it TBH although I am getting better as actually using my blue badge and getting out more rather than staying home so we have progress. OH thinks I should apply for the CEA card and we can start going once a month but that is the only concession I know of.MF aim 10th December 2020 :j:eek:MFW 2012 no86 OP 0/2000

Only time i've used my DLA award was to get a discount leisure card with free carer, as its nigh on impossible for me to go on my own (mental illness). However i wouldn't feel right using it for attractions like theme parks. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0

Not always the case, in fact. I walk with a cane but I cannot manage steps or stairs.Homosexual, Unitarian, young, British, female, disabled. Do you need more?0 -
The point I was trying to touch on earlier though was that the people in wheelchairs might not have been getting a concession because of their disabilities or their care needs.....but ONLY because they wouldn't be able to physically fit through particular areas if they were in a wheelchair. Other posters then replied detailing other care needs but that's not what I was getting at at all, I expect I wasn't clear enough about what I meant.
I'm not agreeing with this btw, only commenting because of the point made by an earlier poster. It's possible the concession was offered solely on a chair not fitting somewhere and care needs didn't come into it. As I said earlier though, IF that's the case then they shouldn't really be classing it as a disabled concession. All imo of course.
But according to the OP the company's policy is that it is a "disabled people's concession" - not a "wheelchair user's concession". The two are different things, and if they're discriminating between people with varying disabilities and using the former term to refer to the concession they offer, I'm fairly sure that that contravenes the DDA.
As I've said in another post: you don't have to be in a wheelchair to be mobility-impaired.Homosexual, Unitarian, young, British, female, disabled. Do you need more?0 -
You are 100% correct, my company has this policy of only giving discounts to wheelchair users as they are unable to access all of the areassarahlouise210 wrote: »Some establishments offer disabled concessions primarily because certain disabled people cannot access parts of that attraction because of their disability.
