    Except it does. Safety, anyone?

Got a bit of an attitude thing going on there?

I feel as if you and I are talking at cross purposes so I'll leave it there.

  • Walking around in pain, losing balance, getting dizzy, getting anxious, slips, trips, finding way around, coping with crowds, people kicking/knocking crutches or sticks, getting tired, pain suddenly getting worse, unable to cope with massive uneven steps, lifts not working, etc?

Are these all acceptable ways for people to be disabled without actually needing four wheels to get around?

I collapse at random with no warning, don't use a wheelchair. I think it wouldn't be fair to offer someone in a wheelchair a carer as not everyone in a wheelchair needs care, I have some very independant friends who use wheelchairs but would be affronted if they were offered a discount on these grounds as they have no care needs whatsoever.

OK, so it's only for people in a wheelchair (NOTE: I AM NOT SAYING THIS IS OK!)...

Today I managed to go to Tesco without a wheelchair. Mainly cos all I was getting was some fabric conditioner and a newspaper. And because I hadn't done anything else all day, and wasn't planning on it.

But on Monday, when I go to Alton Towers, I'm going to be using a wheelchair. Because otherwise I'll collapse before the first ride, I'll be in hideous pain for days and I just won't enjoy it.

So. Am I not disabled today? But I'll be disabled on Monday???

Actually, when I'm on wheels, assuming there's ramps and wideness and stuff, I'm LESS disabled than when I'm walking. The wheelchair (and its associated powered movement) means I can do more, quicker and easier.

As for "what counts as a concession"...OH and I went to a sciency museum in Bath last weekend. It was £4.50 entrance, or BOGOF :rotfl:for concessions. All I had with me to "prove" my disability was my CEA card. The girl on the counter accepted it - it has a photo on - saying that if the cinema lets me in "half price" then so will she.

evidence can be a BB, or your dla reward notice.

some companies won't let you use the disabled toilets unless you are in a wheelchair!!!
Some place will not accept these. Merlin group demands a letter from your Dr detailing your needs.

The point I was trying to touch on earlier though was that the people in wheelchairs might not have been getting a concession because of their disabilities or their care needs.....but ONLY because they wouldn't be able to physically fit through particular areas if they were in a wheelchair. Other posters then replied detailing other care needs but that's not what I was getting at at all, I expect I wasn't clear enough about what I meant.

I'm not agreeing with this btw, only commenting because of the point made by an earlier poster. It's possible the concession was offered solely on a chair not fitting somewhere and care needs didn't come into it. As I said earlier though, IF that's the case then they shouldn't really be classing it as a disabled concession. All imo of course.

Fair enough, but then they would also be offering concessions to people too wide to fit through gaps - which would set off another discussion!
