Haven't read it, but heard about it - didn't they make a film of it ? With Meryl Streep, I believe....

Does this thread remind you of it, then ? I have not made every single CFR recipe as yet, but I fully intend to !

    hello all :)

I'm still alive! Beavering away with CFR and my kitchen floor :)

Am VERY glad for the responses to christmas testing hurrah!

Avocet, I wonder if you would mind particularly looking at the yule log recipe method. (I don't mind if you don't make it, but would still value your wisdom!) I adapted it (frugalised) from delicious! magazine, but theeir method seemed to involve 9 bowls! Which I'm sure you could do a grand job of simplifying :) Also, another piece of good news for you, I tried the cfr toad in the hole, and croatian potato salad made with waitrose basic sausages (pork reared outdoors to same standards as their finest ranges) and the price point for the whole meal is then 48p/29 p per person (tho sadly more potato in the second one, and I know you are not keen!

Sian, glad the crimbo meals tickle your fancy :) it will be great to have your feedback. Your friend the caramelonionoumous makes a welcome return in christmas week.

hello and welcome aureol212, nice to have you on board and also great to see you again stressed mum and glad QOS is with us more of late hooray :) Hello 5nations! Hello Potty! and errrrr anyone I forgot :o

Looks tasty. Off the top of my head, I don't think that particular method can be done with fewer bowls than four -- one for the chocolate, one for the egg yolks and sugar (and eventually all the other bits), one for the egg whites, and one (in a different cooking session) for the cream -- so you've done a good job of cutting it down from the original nine. :-) Nine! A washing up nightmare! What on earth did they find to put in them all?

If I can get hold of a Swiss Roll tin, I will make the Yule Log next weekend. I haven't baked a Swiss Roll or Yule Log type of cake since I was a teenager, so my baking trays are all the wrong size -- which, now I come to think of it, is probably exactly why I haven't made them, because the size really matters for this sort of recipe. Anyhow, I've added the cake ingredients to next weekend's shopping list, in hope of making it as far as a kitchen shop at some point this week.

Yep, they made it into a film, sorry just read back on my post and I didn't write it very well. Meant seen the film or read the book.

A culinary legend provides a frustrated office worker with a new recipe for life in Julie & Julia, the
true stories of how Julia Child's (Meryl Streep) life and cookbook inspired fledgling writer Julie Powell
(Amy Adams) to whip up 524 recipes in 365 days.

yes Allegra, it reminds me of this thread :) . Is there a blog too about it? Julie Powell had a blog about her making these recipes and had quite a following.
  • I invented a curry tonight to have with the sag aloo and the naans I am always raving about. It was red peppers ( not much) loads of onions, garam masala and tiny cheese bits. Fried the first three, put it into a casserole and then popped in the cheese bits and cooked on 300 for 20 mins. Was nommed by all here. Sag aloo ( sans lentils, used them somewhere else :D) was as nom as ever. Oh and the cheese bits I used were actually pieces of left over hot cheese and oniony dip, formed into balls, but shhhh, no one here knows that but me :D.

Going to try the butternut squash rissotto tomorrow as long as nothing gets in the way.

Looking forward to testing some of the xmas recipes soon too.

I think we've been treating the thread as a blog, I guess :) It's got its advantages - blogs are a bit "talking to yourself", and I do that in real life all the time, no point making a habit of it :rotfl: On thread you at least get to talk to proper people, which makes you feel slightly more sane.

However, a blog is a good idea, so if anyone wants to start one up, I'm sure we'd all follow it avidly !

Now she's got you all excited and full of energy with the new Christmas recipes, Weezl needs your help.

Remember the "learning how to fish" articles that Julimk suggested a while back and we all agreed that they were a good idea for the inclusion to CFR ? Well, now it's time to start them off.

Firstly, I'll copy the original post to show you what we actually mean:
However, given the aim to teach her to fish, rather than provide the fish, and the time it would involve to do a further full month’s plan, I think that there would be more value in providing more fishing tools.

For example, more nutritional information such as a portion of fruit =, a portion of veg =, but remember you can count one glass of fruit juice, and also x of dried, a portion of pulses, … and canned and/or frozen are just as good, if not better, because … The RDAs for iron, calcium etc. are … And the additional recipes (including the gorgeous red pepper tart), with nutritional information stated.

And, maybe, further fishing tools such as how to batch cook, which has been started & is being developed further. Possibly, how to put together your own meal plan. Other ideas might be how to frugalise a recipe, if there are particular family favourites they want to still include. And how to cost up a recipe, if want to use own. Maybe how to adapt for single living, or single parent living, or other non-standard 2+2 situations.

So, basically, there are five articles that will need to be written. What Weezl needs now is both people to volunteer to be "in charge" of the article - that is, follow, compile and write up all the tips pertinent to the particular article - and people to just post up their tips.

There are five articles to be written:
    1. How to frugalise a recipe (Weezl has already posted some tips, I'll be happy to dig them up for whoever takes this one on)

    2. Nutrition info - as detailed in J's post above - my feeling is that this one is slightly different to the others, as it's more of a put together a list of how it works (using a reputable site such as the NHS one, for instance), rather than compiling the tips from posters. I know some of you are well clued-up in terms of nutrition, but I will not single anyone out, cos if you can't commit to it it sucks having to decline in public, but if you know about nutrition sufficently to be able to write an article to help a first time CFR user become more independent, please consider it !

    3. How to put together a mealplan - a wealth of advice on Old Style about this, as well as contributions from us here; and whoever takes this one on, feel free to go over to OS and ask for more tips

    4. How to cost up a meal - a good one for anyone who's ever done it - just explain briefly how you go about it !

    5. How to adapt for single living and other non-standard situations - I believe Bigjenny has already put together some tips for single living, but this is a question that we get asked over and over again, and any general or personal tips or pointers or this one are much needed, as well as someone to be in charge of compiling.

So guys, please consider volunteering to be in charge of one of these articles. There is no deadline, so you can volunteer even if you are very busy and know there is no way you can produce it quickly, although a self-imposed deadline would be appreciated so Weezl can plan (in other words, she'll not tell you when it has to be done, but if you say "I'll have it for you by Christmas", that's absolutely fine), and there are no special skills needed apart from the ability to read and type, which every single person posting on this thread clearly has :)
