I've got a question about the porridge recipe: http://www.cheap-family-recipes.org.uk/recipe-porridgevegan.html?opt=p3m1# Why put sugar in the porridge at all? I was surprised that the sugar wasn't marked as optional. We use cinnamon in porridge instead of sugar - even DH enjoys it :D I guess cheap sugar is cheaper than cinnamon and other spices? I assumed the oil is necessary as it is made with water rather than milk but having read the nutrition page I assume it is part of the Omega 6&9 requirement? I'm now intrigued as to what supermarkets do with the ready-brek porridge, I assume they fortify it in some way (ETA, why, yes, your nutrition page tells me so - RTFM :o?).

    hi there :)

I am not putting the sugar as optional as I need it in there to get the calories to be sufficient for this family.

Obviously you are welcome to reduce sugar! If you have enough energy in your diet :) The oil does make a significant taste and mouthfeel difference according to our testers, and yes, is needed to achieve the right omega 6 and 3 balance.

I hope that helps do ask any other questions. What does RTFM mean sorry?

    And welcome! :)

Thanks Weezl. It is interesting to understand the different approaches to a healthy diet as our mindset is to reduce sugar where possible, because our dietary priority is about good blood glucose control. So, for us, for example, bread only comes in granary/multi-grain/soya and lindseed - I can't remember when a white loaf was last in the house as I now regard it as "bad" because it is against the dietary advice DH has to follow. I've found it interesting reading your plan, seeing a different version of a healthy diet.

If you ever reach the stage of vegetarian diabetic meal planning I'll definitely do some serious testing :D;)

    Read The F:o Manual.

I meant I should have browsed the nutrition etc first rather than starting at the kitty pages :o

Thanks for your friendly answers. I will definitely look to see what ideas I can get from your kitty plan.

ok so the brownies needed to go back in the oven for a bit longer after the last photo, I lifted them by the paper to have a poke of the bottom and it really wasn't cooked. This broke the lovely smooth top I'd achieved :( anyhoo in the end they look pants and the edges ended up very nearly burnt in order for the middle to cook (penance for using a tin that's too small :P) but we enjoyed them none the less! :D
I think they taste much yummier warm though, they taste less sweet when cool. our sweet teeth wouldn't like them with as little as 240g sugar but the 285g I used was fine.

th_06ca7371.jpgthey also had risen then fallen alot, no idea why? th_bda2d6f4.jpg th_daf3641c.jpg

I'm just wondering am I supposed to be using a particular type of oil? I thought the good omegas only came from fish :o (feel free to laugh at the noob :))

    :o
    :o
    :whistle::silenced:
But sometimes.... when I feel the need for something sweet, :naughty:a wee spoon sugar goes in....
    :shhh:
But I have to say, thats maybe only about twice a year ;)

Here Potty this is what i used. It goes into a greased 8" round tin for approx 50 mins at 190 degrees. I found my food processor could not cope with the lemon so ended up with chunks in the cheesecake which we did not mind too much but you may want to use a hand blender instead. Let me know how you get on with it. We found it very yummyxx

[19:04:31] Weezl: ok shanks 1 tub natural yog, i tub soft cheese 1 lemon and 240g sugar and 5 eggs all pulverised in your blender cut the lemon up it bits first and pulverise REALLY well place on a base made of 1 pack ginger biscuits crushed up with a scant tbspn oil to bring it together: bake :)
  • Made Pasta Alfredo for tea last night, very nice. There is enough left for lunch today, I did tweak it a little bit and added some mushrooms that were just on the turn.

Today I'm going to make Chicken & Onion Puddings for tea.

Glad to hear the pasta alfredo was a success. It's great how we can vary the recipes a bit too depending on what you have available :T
