I manage the antimoneylaundering team for an investment bank. I have an MA in French & German but don't really use it. I entered the industry in 1999 after managing the global videoconferencing system for PricewaterhouseCoopers. Prior to that, I did PA work. For this kind of work, you need strong research skills and lots of logical ability, be prepared to listen to your gut instinct if it says something isn't right, be unflappable under pressure and have a firm character to stand up to prima donna traders who throw strops on a daily basis and stand and scream by your desk if they don't get their own way.
The ability of skinny old ladies to carry huge loads is phenomenal. An ant can carry one hundred times its own weight, but there is no known limit to the lifting power of the average tiny eighty-year-old Spanish peasant grandmother.

You all earn far more than me - I'mm 22 and get about £1130 per month after tax...is this bad?

I am 36, take home varies at approx 1,118 to 1,1172 so no, it's not bad. If my employer allowed me to train properly and do my job properly the industry standard is £30k a year. My job is rare where I live so would have to move 200 miles to get decent paid job away from family. It's a dilemma alright.

My OH is 40 + and earns £720 a month. Your wage is excellent!

  • I always thought us civil servants got poor pay, but after reading these replies, perhaps I should be happier with my circa £2200pm and nice final salary scheme. Of course, I've always consoled myself with the fact that I do very little work & hardly any hours in the office. Hence being able to post this at 3.30pm at home!
But then again I do have to deal with all the baddies on a daily basis.. (including funnily enough right now, adult models avoiding tax..!)

But I stopped enjoying the job many years ago, so wouldn't say no to a career move - if I could find another job which a) paid as much b) also allowed me to work only about 5 hours per day! c) also required no qualifications d) was as near to my house as this one e) also had similarly lovely colleagues. f) but was not the damn civil service.
But hell, my job suddenly sounds superb reading this back. Must try & find a way of appreciating that.

But your OH could give the civil service a go, 'cos we take anyone..
Oh and my mate in MI5 enjoys his well paid job, so try their website.

What i see here is lots of people doing jobs they hate, but being stuck with them cos they need to sustain that level of income to sustain the standard of living they have become accustomed to. Me included, altho the pay barely sustains my standard of living!

not at all. I'm 30 and it has taken me 9 years of hard graft to work my way up to bringing in just over £1000 after tax. I spent my twenties desperately trying to earn more money, applying for every job under the sun and crying with despair at having to drag myself to work every day to a job that I not only hated but which didn't even pay the bills. I'm capable, I'm well educated, I've even got a lot of experience but as for earning power.....its pretty much non-existent.

But recently I have opened my eyes and realised that I'm not alone in this, and a lot of it comes down to geography. I could earn much more if I relocated, but family commitments have kept me where I am. I've just had to accept it.

You say that you have no skills, have you thought about retraining. I am currently retraining to work in the environmental health field. I am doing a diploma with the OU. If you are on a low income then you can get part of your fees taken off. https://www.open.ac.uk. Or there are free taster courses you can do at https://www.visiontolearn.co.uk. These include basic IT and other things.
    Hope this helps

I take home just over £2200 after NI and tax, however I have had to sell my soul to a city Bank to do so. I am starting a part time course soon (going to be tough as I work at least 12hrs per day as it is) so that I can get out of here while I am still young enough to enjoy it (I am 26). However this does not go very far in London (did anyone see the story about Ballack not being able afford to live in London when he earns £130k per week?).
